Check Plot Transparency--Plotter Output is Blank Paper.GRRRR

Using a OCE TDS 450. When I check Plot Transparency in the Plot Options of the Page Setup dialog the plotter output is blank paper. Uncheck it and it plots normally. but without the transparency i would like. Anyone know how to get the Oce to plot with transparency? this is sort of a drag because i have recently switched to a new company and am used to using transparencies since they came out ( 2011 ) as our field fabrication / installation dwgs are pretty heavy with info, I really love transparencies to convey specific info dependant on the end-user. it works ok making a pdf. but our old IBM did it to paper without a hitch.( just a little longer ) Thanks for any help. I have checked the forums but do not see any real solutions. if not could someone suggest a best approach to grayscale ? could i use it for certain layers ?
