AUTOCAD 2012 crashes when printing to the plotter

Hello Forum,

Autocad freezes when selecting a plotter. The Plotter is an HP designjet 500(http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=18...).  The drivers are upto date. We have three other plotter, same result. No issues in printing on a laser/color printer which are on a network.

Plotter are on a network, managed by a print server.I  have used a HP universal driver, which stopped the freezing but nothing would print.

System Configuration:

Dell Optiplex 990, I5 processor

10GB Ram

500 GB HD

Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit.

Need to fix this ASAP.

We had a similar issue when we moved to Windows 7 / AutoCAD 2011.. going to an HP 5550. The solution was to add a custom sheet size for our 11x17 prints. and it's been working since.

Can you print 8.5x11 and not 11x17?

Are you running a post script print driver?

If you are running Windows 7 64 bit  AutoCAD 2010 or higher and you a using an HP post script driver select 11x17 and it will most likely crash.

Try a HP PLC driver the qaulity may be lower but it beats crashing with no print.

I would definitely make sure you have the latest Universal Driver from HP, and there are three choices:

PCL5
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swItem=ds-99378-2

PCL6
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swItem=ds-99374-2

PostScript
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swItem=ds-99376-2

One of these may work better than the other. AutoCAD tends to do better with non-PostScript too. I'd try the PCL5 one first.

If these don't help, then it must bee something with the print server and how it's handling the driver. I've seen a couple cases on this where the driver was thought to be updated but the server was still using the old one.
