BOM Explosion

I have a general question to the forum for processing a BOM.

Has anyone tried to take the Structured list and explode to a flat BOM in say the Grid or Managed Items tab.

I have need to take the BOM and generate the Flat BOM with the summarized quantities so that the next step in my workflow may update or customize the list for a project (I.E. Change Quantities add additional items), and the set status for the items in that tab to control or start workflows in other workspaces.

I essence create an PBOM or Production BOM, I had first though BOM Views combinded with the flat bom and additional fields in the BOM tab would work, but because our engineering drawings will not always be 100% accurate to what our field crews will have available to use. I need to be able to customize a parts list for a project but keep the engineering BOM intact.

Looking for thoughts

Hi Bob,

Could you consider exporting the Flat BOM and reimporting it as another 'Production BOM' that can be further edited? This new BOM will not retain any relationships to the originating BOM, but you will be able to edit it as needed.

Bastien,

Thank you for the reply,

Using the BOM Views and the Nested vs Flat tabs would get me what I want in terms of the desired information. Also copying (import/export) the BOM to another record is not what I need to accomplish. The Engineering BOM & Production (Equipment) Flat list need to be in the same Project Record (Engineering BOM = BOM Tab & Equipment List = Managed Items Tab)

The idea is that our engineering department will create general arrangement drawings for a job in Inventor. Then, using vault ITEMS we will import the BOM into PLM360. We want the Drawing BOM in PLM for project visibility (Vault Client does not give us what we want to see) to our Project Managers. Our PM's group would then explode that BOM into a flat list of parts needed for the job as part of our Project Workflow.

The reason I need to edit that flat list is because where I may call out Qty 4 of ITEM 123 in the EBOM, I need to list that item 4 times in the Production BOM because we substitue the exact Inventory record (serial Numbered - Records from a second workspace) item used on the job.

I.E. the engineering drawing/Item -> Operation Inventory Items

My first thoughts todo this would be a script that uses an Array to itterate through the EBOMS on a project record and build a list of the Items for summarizing in the PBOM. For our Serial Numbers Items the next step in the workflow would not be allowed to proceed until all items in the exploded PBOM had been replaced with the Inventory item records to be used on the job.

Also there are other items that the Project Manager may need for the job that need to be included in the Production Equipment List (PBOM) that are not designated by Engineering (Electrical cords, flood lights & Generator for night work).

Hi Bob,

Thank you for providing further details. If what you are looking for is the ability to explode quantity into individual instances, please log this as a new idea to the PLM 360 IdeaStation for future consideration.
