getGeomExtents question

Hi
does anybody know if the getGeomExtents method only works for database
resident entities?, this is what I am doing.

Get the extents of a Database resident entity, if it does not return
Acad::eOk, then I call the explode() method of the entity and call the
getGeomExtents method of the entities in the AcDbVoidPntArray, filled in by
explode. This returns Acad::eOk but the extents min and max points are all
1e20 or -1e20!.

any thoughts
