Batch Utility?

I'm wondering if anyone has some suggestions on free batch utilities compatible with AutocAD 2008.

I've used script pro before, but it does not seem to perform as well as the other programs that generate a script file for AutoCAD to run through. I can write something like this on my own, but want to know if there's something out there already done with more features than I am able to do right now.

Also, does anyone have any information on how well batching works through the .net api vs a script? Is it quicker to put AutoCAD in SDI mode and have it go through drawings, or do you get a performance boost by opening drawings via .net as dbojbects and doing your work that way.
