Solids show as hollow when using section tool.

I'm using Navisworks 2011 simulate, importing Step files made from CATIA and when I try the sectioning tool on the model the sections look hollow. Anyone know why this is happening?

This is the way the models are brought into Navisworks unfortunately. If you change the render mode to Wireframe or Hidden Line then you'll see that the model is made up of triangles rather than solid pieces, this means we have improved performance particuarly with large models.

If you would like to log an enhancement to add end caps when sectioning, please go to this link.

Lee,

Can you confirm if Navisworks 2013 still has this issue or if there has been any enhancement added to created end caps when sectioning?

Thanks.

Dear Lee,

May I ask if this function is available in Navisworks 2014 / 2015? If so where I can enable it?

Thanks!

Vivian

Hi Lee,

Is this still in development? Is there a targeted version?

We would really like to have the end caps option available when sectioning.

Thanks

Lee,

This still appears to be the case for 2015 - has there been any developments or is it impossible to retain the end caps when sectioning though solid objects?

Thanks,

Fionn

After so many years of virtually no updates (certainly nothing worth while or exciting), it is disappointing to say the least that this issue has not been addressed! I'd love to take a quick poll to see how many users are willing to limit data set size for the ability to cap solid ends... So I copied this:

Summary: Fill-in the elements cut in Navisworks as they can in Design Review or the Online Viewer (or Revit or any other 3D software !) + Provide "capping" hatch customization through a browser item override.

Description: It has been already 10 years that this question is in the drawer and posted every year on every single Navis Forum worldwide !
Please provide the ability to "cap" the sections as Design Review does. To better visualize clashes when coordinating models, As already said everywhere it is really difficult to see if we are in or out a concrete element when coing coordination with multi-trade complicated civil work models or complex buildings
I would suggest to make the "capping fill hatch" customizable (hatch type, transparency, color) at the item level in the same dialog box where we can override the transparency, color, etc. This way we could set the capping style for a whole model or whole pipe system or selected group of elements or clashing items

Into the description of the Naviswork wishlist

The more people we can get to do the same the better chance we have of getting it implemented.

Thanks 🙂

.... and I even don't ask (yet) for "2D like" drawing generation (with door swings, hatches, annotations,....) that BIMsight can do... ^^

OH!

You think we should have proper annotation tools for redlining??!!

Huh?  You can redline/annotate very easily.  If you mean create drawings - yeah, no thanks, plenty of tools for that in the actual design applications.  Last thing we need is people trying to create their own construction drawings from bootleg content, then blaming the NWD provider when the dimensions don't match up.

Agree. It's one of Navis's big drawbacks

Navisworks 2018.2 now allows you cap sections and change the colour
