Show grating of Plant3D in Navisworks

Hello everbody I want to do one cuestion about grating of Plant3D. When I open any project of plant3D with Navisworks I can see all propierties of Plant3D in the tab "AutoCAD", all perfils are visualization fine but the grating is not appear. Only appear transparent box in the place of grating. I think that the problem is that Navisworks don't recognize the hatch pattern. Is posible to do that the grating visible?

When I use the command NWCout or NWDout I can see all objects (grating too) fine. But the problem is that the propierties of Plant3D (especification of pipe, size, and others) don't appear, this problem I was explain an other post.

Thanks

Hi bogdanov.y,

I was able to reproduce the issue by creating my own sample file with a grating.  I have documented this issue and sent it to our development team for investigation.

I recommend logging a support call to Autodesk Support via the subscription site link below so that your support case can be tracked, and we can investigate your files as well:

This thread dates back to 2009, yet in 2013 I seem to be having the exact problem.  If I use NWCOUT from a Plant3D2013 model set to ShapeModel, then all is fine.  But if I try pointing NW Reader at the P3D dwg, it only brings in as if it were set to LineModel.

Am I missing a setting? Or has this just not been fixed in 4 years?

The only work around I have found for this, is to explode the hatch which will turn it into Lines which will show up.  If your in mid design then its a problem. For the final product however it does look nice if it wont change.  (After I explode the hatch I turn it into a block)

Hi,

We are running Plant 3D and Navis Manage on a project. The grating will not show in Navis, only the banded section on the perimeter. Due to program deadlines, we are trying to get a "work around", as the usual Autodesk response will be very slow, and probably need a few hot fixes later on as well. For us, the Navis model is very important, it is how we discuss the project with the client and get approvals and show progress. A structure without grating looks pathetic. We tried changing it to plate, and add transparency in Navis, it won't budge. If you are desperate, draw the grating outline using a polyline, then extrude it, save, and click on it in Navis, go to item Tools, and change the transparency. This will give you a ghost effect.

This is very annoying, up to a month or so ago it all worked fine. Now the grating won't even show when an elevation is generated in Ortho mode. It actually renders drawings almost useless.

Autodesk need to step up and fix what are very expensive packages.....

Hi,

If you export your Plant 3D drawing to dwfx and load that in to Navis rather than the dwg then the grating will display - however, you won't get any Plant properties for the structural items.  If you only need the visual model then this should be ok.

The other thing to be aware of is that the orientation of the dwfx file will be rotated by 90 around the x-axis relative to the dwg file.  You can fix this in Units and Transform...

Hi @lokman.aktas,

Export your drawing with grating as 3DWF.
open this 3DWF file in Navisworks.
Should help solve your problem.

Use NWCOUT command in Plant3D for export file directly in NWC file.

I don't understand too why Autodesk don't resolve this. Navisworks don't read DWG file, but if you use Navisworks reader from AutoCAD (NWCOUT command) work correctly, I think that this bug it's possible to solve easy.

It worked for me after trying multiple other things!!

I downloaded a trial version of the Autodesk app "PDF VisionWorksplace" to create a 3D pdf of the drawing.

It worked, everything displayed!!

Thanks!

This solution worked for me!!

There's a plug in app called VisionWorks to create a 3D pdf.  The grating showed in it as well.

Thanks!

Message 17 of 28

advertising 3rd party apps does not provide a solution to the question at hand

dwfx is a better option than creating a 3d pdf

nwcout is a better option than using dwfx

neither however address the fact that if the code for nwcout works then it should not be difficult to include that function in the built in navisworks dwg reader

2020 is out ... has anyone tested to see if it works now or was my "maybe by 2020" comment from back in 2016 a bit naive

Its not fixed in 2020
Message 19 of 28

Advertising 3rd party apps doesn't solve the problem, but meanwhile, it worked!!!  I'd tried everything else I could think of and from forums.   The .dwfx has to be opened w/ Acad Design Review.  Most of the people I'll be sending stuff to only has Adobe Reader, at best.  The lucky ones have Adobe Standard DC.   Not sure what .nwcout pulls up with for non-Cad folks.  For now, I'm functional for what I do.

Message 20 of 28

this issue happened to us today

grating now appearing properly in Navisworks 2020 when it shows correctly in Plant3d 2020

I used command NWCOUT in plant3d

then opened the .nwc  by double clicking

the grating showed up just fine

I don't understand why this just randomly

grating has always showed up on the many projects we have done since upgrading to navis 2020

A real solution would be helpful
