Selecting objects in Navis

How can I select an object that is within an object without hiding the outside object. Is there anyway to scroll through the items that are near? I am using Navis Manage 2011.

Thanks,

Amy

You can select by name if you know it in the selection tree.

You can also search by name if your model elements are many. Shift+F3

Alternatively you can select the object that it is inside of and hide (cnt+H) it (and others) until your object is revealed.

hope that helps

In the Options, with Selection,

you can also play with the posibilities "Geometry, First, last, and so on to see if that works for you

Hi awitt

When you state that the object is within an object, is this object that is inside a subcomponent of the other object or is it another object on another branch in the selection tree and this is a matter of another separate object obscuring it in the view?

The previous suggestions should help in that you can try hiding the object that is obscuring the other item inside or selecting the item that is obscuring from within the selection tree if you know which listing it is.  Also as suggested, it may be a matter of the selection resolution setting as by default it is set to last object, and if you are selecting in the view, it may be selecting the entire object rather than an individual piece of geometry.  You can adjust this setting by sliding out the Select & Search panel in the Home tab and setting it to geometry.  You can also cycle through selection resolutions by holding down SHIFT while clicking the same item in the scene.

Please let us know if this resolves the issue.

If it doesn’t, can you send some screenshots of the view and what the item structure looks like in the selection tree?

Thanks for all the suggestions, but this is what I am trying to accomplish.

I am creating a nwd for the field to view. The dgn's that are provided do not have information such as the equipment number. At this point in time, there are 1300 pieces of equipment and they will multiply as time goes on. They are in a database with the x,y,z. So I created a block that has a 3" diameter sphere and attached attributes of the equipment. I want the field to be able to click on the sphere (or hover on it with quick properties) to see what the equipment is. I am assuming they will not know how to hide objects. The mechanical equipment has a transparency set to it so you can see the sphere. I can't select the sphere. I was hoping there would be a way to scroll through the objects near by like the next option in Autocad or make it so the mechanical equipment is not selectable.

I will also have to set up everyone's Freedom viewer for all the settings needed to see the information.

I also tried hyperlinks but there are so many the model starts to be cluttered and you can see the ones off in the distance.

Thanks,

Amy

Hi awitt

You can use the select box to drag a box over both the transparent sphere and the item you wish to select.  This will select both the sphere and the item inside that you actually want to select.  You can then hold down the CTRL key and unselect the sphere object in the selection tree.

Since sphere is still present and is transparent, when you try to click the sphere or however for quick properties, you are selecting the sphere.  Would you be able to create a two viewpoints: one with the spheres transparent, and one with the spheres actually hidden.  Then depending on whether you want to see the properties of the item inside, it is just a matter of changing the viewpoint to turn off the spheres, and you can easily turn them back on by clicking the other viewpoint?

You would create these viewpoints with “Hide/Required” saved attribute turned on.  More information on this can be found here:
