Quantification /Estimation does it start from Navisworks or from Revit Family

HI,

I am trying to learn Quantification/Estimation using Navisworks.

Is there a workflow around somewhere that outlines what needs to happen before one actually use Navisworks?

On specific question is, how important is the family that revit uses from which i create my naviswork model to quantify?

as an example, i see revit family hierarchy that does not make sense, such as putting Storm pipe/fittings under waste pipe family.

So i am wondering should i be takling the problem at the Revit level to make sure that all items come from a well defined catalog?

Or should i not deal with revit, since i do not have contriol over whatever customers catlog looks like, and just focus on defining a Navisworks company catalog?

any input will be great..

thanks,

Thank you for your post.  In this case the quantification tool was new for the 2014 release and has a number of great features.  For reference I have included a few helpful links below with details on how to set this tool up and create best possible chance for success in quantification navigation within all files.  This will help in the communication of the data coming into the tool, and in your inquiry.

Please keep us posted and let us know how this worked out or if there are any questions.  Thank you and we look forward to your reply update.

HI Michael,

Thanks for your response.

I have been on the links you have sent me before..

but these links they are more about the mechanics of doing things, that after many attempts one may deduce certain approach.

I was really hoping that someone will respond to my question with something along the lines of " don't waste your time on fixing things on the revit side because....."  or "It is impaerative that your Revit material is very well defined, because ...."

Depending on that answer, i would know which approach to take.... i.e. spend time to learn how to create families for revit so i can easily transfer to items in Navisworks. Or, ignore revit completely and focus on creating/learning ways to find items in a project in Navisworks.

regards,

fawzi

Thank you for your reply.  In this case there are two options, to schedule in Revit or in Navisworks.

As a user of both, I can see the pros/cons of each.  I see the setup in quantification (catalog) as an opportunity for future projects (once created) with ease.  To help identify what is needed, you may need to create entries in a custom catalog to be used (then after) in navisworks, for these revit entities.  Again there is some time spent in this initial setup to read and successfully process the data then after (multiple projects).  This will come down to preference and time.

To help explain this I have included the link below with details on catalog creation (navisworks),

http://beyonddesign.typepad.com/posts/2013/08/using-catalogues-in-navisworks-quantification.html

I have also included a helpful guide to the complete quantification tool below,

Quantification Users Guide:  https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/navisworks-products/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/20...

One additional link below on this same question you have posed with Revit vs Navisworks quantification.

Helpful Link in another community (Autodesk Post #2):

I hope this helps.  Please let us know if there is anything else in the community we may assist with.  Thank you and we look forward to your reply.

The linnk to the revit vs naviswork was also helpfull.

I will mark this as answered..

I do have one question that i would like you to look at... i will post it as a separrate discusion. i will label it "Quantification of Vertical Pipe". if you can take a look at it, i would appriciate it.

thanks,
