Navisworks Viewpoints Import Error - 2012

Viewpoints are no longer importing for me in Navisworks Manage 2012.  Attached is the error message.

Viewpoints created earlier still import, but ones I have exported recently are not being allowed to import back in.

One way I have to save exports is to publish the full nwd and grab the exports from it for the next model, but I would rather keep the operations separate.  Thank you.

Is this on the same machine?

If so has there been any change in the installation between export and import? i.e. has the service pack or subscription release been installed?

If this is a different machine is there any change between the Navisworks installations on both of those machines?

Do you have a smaple XML file you can upload so we can test?

Attached are some viewpoints examples.

I have both Navisworks Manage 2010 and 2012 and was mainly using 2010 until recently.  I had to switch to 2012 to see some of the files that I was receiving and took the viewpoints I had created in 2010 and started to build on the viewpoint list in 2012.  As far as I can remember, this seemed to work for a while, but then stopped working about a week ago.

In the examples attached, I made viewpoints in either 2010 or 2012.  The ones made in 2010 worked in both 2010 and 2012 but the ones made in 2012 worked in neither

Also, I wanted to try to get around it by saving as a 2010 nwd but it seems that functionality in 2012 is not there?  Saw that option for a 2010 nwf but that still tries to open 2012 files which won’t work in 2010.  In the 2010 version the ability to save as earlier version nwds came in handy several times.

Also, it is on the same machine.  As far as I know the only changes to the machine have been some automatic updates either from Windows or the company's IT deparment upon system shutdown.  I also have tried to install several object enablers.

It looks like there are some invalid values around box sectioning in these viewpoints. Is there any sectioning? Can you delete and recreate the sections? If there is no sectioning you may be able to switch on the box section and switch it back on to add the values.

Do you have an NWD we can pass to development?

Here are some nwd and viewpoint examples with and without sectioning.

In the previous viewpoint examples sent, there was no sectioning.

In the file that I want to work with, there is sectioning.

So in the suggestion, the thing to try if there is no sectioning is:

turn on sectioning, switch to box sectioning, turn off sectioning, then try to export viewpoints?

By the way, these viewpoints both imported into Navisworks Manage 2012 in the boxtest example.  The viewpoints from the prior example still do not except for the 2010 version.  The difference is that I created the boxtest example from scratch but the other example I created viewpoints within the file that I normally work with (which has a mix of nwds, dwgs, 2010 & 2012, and has sectioning viewpoints included normally).

Here is more information I was able to see by experimenting with different combinations of files:

There are 5 main groups of files I am working with so I went through and isolated each set.  There was no issue with the first 4 groups individually.   When I put the first 4 groups together there were several crashes when I tried to save viewpoints, so then I tried adding a viewpoint as I appended each file and it seemed to work if I excluded the 4th group of files.  In the 4th group I can add viewpoints when there are already viewpoints there, but if I delete the existing viewpoints and try to add new ones the viewpoints don’t get added and the program crashes.  The 5th group is a single nwd that does not allow resaving.

When the 5th group file is the only one loaded, viewpoints cannot be added.

When another file is loaded first, viewpoints cannot be added but can be imported, but then the program crashes soon after.

When I use the file I normally work with which is a single nwd with several dwgs & nwds embedded and append the 5th group file, I can add viewpoints to the existing list, import working viewpoint files, but if I delete the existing viewpoints I cannot add more viewpoints.

I think I can see some of what is going on here.

In 2011 version we changed Sectioning significantly, so we would expect Viewpoints with Sectioning in 2010 to work correctly in in 2012, however we would not expect 2012 Viewpoints to work in 2010.

Regarding the Infinite values, these do not appear in the last XML file you uploaded. We have not been able to recreate this and we think this may just be a small glitch, switching off the sectioning and switching it back on 'should' resolve this. You can check in an XML editor or notepad to see if any of the values have INF, if they do, recreate the viewpoint.

If you have a set scenario where these Viewpoints with Infinite values occur every time, please let us know.

I hope this clarifies some of the issues you are having.

After removing a few files that seemed to be related and starting the viewpoints list from scratch without any sectioning, I can export and import the new viewpoint created.  I would really like to be able to create sectioned views without error, but the different combinations of turning on and off sectioning and removing different files and viewpoints don't seem to allow it in 2012 when I had no problem in 2010, even from scratch.  Also the program seems to be crashing much more frequently in the past few days, but perhaps that is related to the error with viewpoints as I try different combinations.

The workaround that I have settled on is working in Navisworks Manage 2010 to make viewpoints, saving the nwd, then opening with 2012 and adding the files that require 2012, then saving.  2012 seems to accept the 2010 viewpoints embedded in the nwd (with sections included), just not the ones created within itself.

This problem occurs in Navisworks 2014 as well.  It occurs if any viewpoint is redlined.  If none of the viewpoints are redlined, then the import.xml works.  I would like to know if Autodesk has fixed this but in vs. 2015.

You cannot import clash test either in 2014.

Try to be more specific. When does the import fail ?
Is the viewpoint redlined ánd clipped ?
Copy your NWF or NWD, delete all viewpoints but one and export.
Is this importable ? If yes, try the next viewpoint until you find one that does not import. Then open the XML with an XML editor and compare to see the differences in that migh cause the import to fail.
If you want us to test with a 2015, post 2 XMLs, one that works and one that fails.

Hi Patrick,

Attached:

1. Sample NWD file with two sets of viewpoints: one with redlines and
one without.

2. Screen capture of error message when trying to import viewpoints
that have been redlined.

3. Viewpoint export file named: view exports_RED
LINES_NAVIS_2014-07-16.xml - this contains redlined views

4. view exports-NO RED_NAVIS_2014-07-16.xml - this has no redlined
views in it

5. Clash export test_NAVIS_2014-07-16.xml

There is also a problem with importing Clash tests.

Thank you for looking into this!
