Navisworks or 3D Max?

Hello Everyone,

In terms of animation which of Navisworks or 3D Max is better. Can you please put down some reasons?

Thanks.

It depends on what you want to do. Navisworks tends to be used mostly for creating simple quick animations, such as demonstrating a construction sequence. Whereas 3DS Max would be used for more complex animations and rendering.

You can get great results in both, this for example is a construction sequence in Navisworks

This is a great article about creating smooth animations you may find useful.

To make it simple:

if the technical contents is more important than the good looks of the animation,

If you need to measure, see if something fits, see if everything is accessable....

and end-users do not bother what color the walls have, as long as they are on the right location...

if you want to deliver a file where end-users can roam around freely...

and where custumers need to command and give feedback on the model

use NavisWorks

if the look and feel of the animation is more important than technical correctness,

if your end product should be an filme and nothing else

if the materials used must have the exact look in the animiation

use Max.

Hopefully this is the right place to ask this question.

If you have a Navisworks file is there anyway to import into 3D Studio Max.

I am asking for another person, so if specifics are needed I can check with him.

Thank you

Rick

you can export out of navisworks to .fbx file and import that file into 3ds max

depends on the version of navisworks

Hi Abdul,

Navisworks Freedom does not allow export of models, only viewing of NWD and DWF files.

You will need Navisworks Simulate or Navisworks Manage 2012 to be able to export to FBX. More information can be found here

I have only used timeline simulation feature to make a export movie. but recently i have seen your animated construction autodesk movie on youtube. it is amazing. I liked the animation which you had used in your movie. as an intermediate naisworks manage user, I would like to know how to use this animation tools in your video. so far I have only used timeline simulate in order to create an movie. I am not familiar the animation part in navisworks manage 2012.

I would be grateful to you if you could provide any tutorial or actual movie for your animated construction video on youtube.

I  desperately need your those kinds animation technics for my building construction project.

thanks

The construction sequencing is amazing - I would like to see it export to 3DS max in order to achieve higher resolution, greenscreening, and photorealism.  The rendering time in Navisworks is painfully long, and doesn't allow for render farm usage either.

We are doing a minute-long sequence in Navisworks and it is taking almost a full week to render.  Our client is seeing it as a waste of time as the animation quality is so poor.

maybe in a future release of navisworks that would be pretty cool

If you are doing a minute-long animation as a single unedited sequence, yes it will take some time - longer without extreme hardware.  Typically what is done is the images are rendered in either short segments or single frames, then editing software is used to stitch them together coherently (after post-processing).

Long "beauty shots" aren't that common in the media industry.  Have a look at animated and FX-heavy movies and television shows, and watch the editing.  You will see the majority of times between edits are in the 3-5 second range, and thats with professional video editing, specially created hardware and software, and huge budgets.  Looking at the original construction sequence carefully you can see where the sequences could be broken down into more manageable chunks.

For a full-on high end render in 3DS Max you will likely be better off taking the original data and opening it with 3DS Max, rather than translating to Navisworks, then translating to FBX (or other supported format).

Yes I agree - it would look amazing to see on a real site.

As I understand it - Primavera provides the data that Navisworks uses in the Timeliner.  Can it be imported somehow into Max.

Dunno... you would need to ask a "3DSMax professional" for that one.  They may get their animation and camera controls from other sources.

At the moment you would need to 'fake' the construcion sequence in Max, there's no way to export that or the animation from Navisworks or link to Primavera through Max.

Thanks Lee,

This would be a great feature to add to Max in the future!

hello friends

I have a serious problem in the export of native RVM file AVEVA PDMS to Autodesk FBX file.

Since my idea is to transport the AVEVA PDMS model to Autodesk 3dmax to create a stage environment with animation and real material thing with AVEVA Review can not be done, much less with the Autodesk naviswork

I draw the pdms rvm and then I export to Autodesk naviswork because there is no direct export to 3dmax

The naviswork it works to perfection right there and do the export to FBX but when you export to 3dsmax FBX through a freeze on the model, it is impossible to work in

My pc has the following characteristics

intel core 2 quad q8800
8 gb ram ddr2 800 mhz
1 gb ddr3 video card

I would like to know if anyone has had the same problem as it is too time than it takes to load the FBX in 3dmax

You try everything I canceled during the export lights, cameras, and textures, I've also updated the FBX plug-ins to the most current but I still have the same problem

Hopefully they can help me solve my problem thanks and regards
