Navisworks Mobile

We recently implemented Navisworks using nwf files linked to the dwg files for coordination, reviews, etc.  I have to say it works great and has been well received, not to mention the manhours it saves.  Here's the trick question:  Is it possible to view the 3d nwf files on mobile devices out in the field?    I see that Inventor Publisher has a mobile app function for ipod, ipad which we will be testing. Are there other solutions?  Is anyone doing this already?

NWF?  Not likely - look at the size of the Simulate install.  We do it on a laptop with the models copied locally though.  NWD?  Maybe - but even Freedom is getting a little chubby as it incorporates more features.  And neither of those is considering the size of whats being viewed.  No magic "Justdoitnow!" button in this case.

Hello BigAl70454,

Navisworks is quite a large program and there is currently no version available for mobile devices like Tablets or Smartphones. Navisworks is currently developed for installs on PC based machines. If you needed to take your work into the field your best option is to install Navisworks on a Laptop machine. This is the best way to get your model out and about.

Thank you for the responses.  However, let me clarify.  I'm not wanting to install Navisworks on a mobile device. Inventor Publisher can publish files to a mobile format.  A free app can then be downloaded to view those mobile files.  You do not have to install Inventor Publisher on the mobile device, which is not possible anyway.  My suggestion to Autodesk is to add the ability to import Navisworks files into Inventor Publisher, then those nwd/nwf iles could be published and viewed on mobile devices.

Hello BigAl70454 ,

Thank you for the clarification. That is a bit different, yes. You will want to direct functionality requests to our enhancement portal, if you have not done so already. The portal feeds requests to our development managers and they review these requests to determine the growth of the application.

It is located here:

Thank you for the clarification and thank you for participating in our community!

Personally I would like to see something like autoCAD WS but for Freedom Viewer. My guess is all software will be cloud based over the next 10 years.

If Autodesk can't see mobile devices as the new frontier it's too bad. As an architect, being able to walk inside my building with a Navis Viewer type program on a Motoral Xoom-like tablet would be liberating and revolutionary.

Think about it, the device already has an accelerometer and GPS. Users would be able to litteraly experience a BIM model unlike anything done before; being able to see building systems through walls, above ceiling whitout the need for demo work ... it would become the most practical tool for the AEC and Realestate industries.

Actually Autodesk is behind the 8 ball on this because you can currently export a bim, upload it and view it in Google Earth; and GE is available for android and apple. Their problem is ofcourse they have a frustrating file size problem. But I figure it's only a matter of time until mr. Eric Schmidt realizes Autodesk's lack of intiative and come up with an app for that.

So, no! it's not in 10 years, it's this summer! It just won't be autodesk.

Two trains of thought here...........1........ the ability  for 'stripping down' the app software to a suitable, functional USABLE format toget on the mobile device.............2. the mobile device having the horsepower to run.  While there are many things ADESK does or soesn't do that I question at times, and even frustrates me, One thing I can say is that with all the oushing they've done over the past few years promoting BIM, etc, I am relatively certain that they have looked into it......probably just haven't been able to 'water down' NW enough to run on the limited horsepower mobile have right now.  BUT I DO expect to see it soon.  One problem I see though is that the friggin mobile devices seem to change more often than I change my undies.  I can't imagine trying to stay up with the Hardware.  Just my to cents.

Well Mike, what they need to do - and they do this all the time - is pair up with hardware manufacturers, ala HP and NVDIA , and have them meet the minimum requirements of a watered down NW. I don't care how they do it; frankly I think the technology, device-wise, is already there and it shouldn't matter that it changes often. Autodesk owes it to itself to make it happen software-wise. One way could be to make the mobile version flash base like Tekla. It doesn't matter; look at what Google did sketchup !

Listen, don't get me wrong, Autodesk deserve recognition for Revit -  probably the best platform in the market - and for pushing BIM the way they have. However, if they want to keep the lead, they must move quicker.

I strongly believe that making BIM available on a mobile device, not as a modeling tool , but as a viewing tool, will bring the BIM process full circle, and will fundamentally change the industry. People will get it. And then they will demand it. The repercussion being felt in ways we can't even imagine yet. By doing so they will have effectively immerse the user, any user, inside a virtual world by providing a window to it; not by putting the user in some sophisticated environment, or in some office, but at their disposal where they want to be. We'll all be Superman with laser vision.
