Navisworks Manage errors

We have been having problems with Manage 2012 on a laptop.  The laptop is a Dell 4400 Precision with a fresh wipe and install of XP and all XP updates to SP3.  Then it is a clean install of manage 2012, freedom viewer 2012, exporter plugins, and then it has autocad 2012.  It is setup as a network license and we are borrowing the license from the server if that would make any difference.

See two attached files.

Unfortunately we installed Manage before Autocad was installed on the machine and then we had problems with the exporter plugins in autocad.  Unable to use the NCWOUT feature.  Once we got the exporters working, now we get the following to errors when trying to load a nwf file that contained our nwc file we created from autocad.

I did a repair on the exporter plug-in and on the manage 2012 and we still get the same errors.  I'm guessing I need to simply uninstall and reinstall manage 2012 along with the freedom viewer and the exporter plugins.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Hi there,

Do you get the same error messages when loading the NWC directly in Manage, or only when loaded from the NWF? Is the problem repeatable (does another NWC exported from AutoCAD post-repair still have the issue)?

The first error typically means that there is some component of the file that isn't currently licensed - with a Manage license all components should be licensed, so it would be worth verifying that the license checked out really is a Manage one.

Hope that helps,

I can load load the nwc file by itself using Manage 2012 without any error.  But when I try to load the nwf file using Manage 2012 I get the internal error and the license error.

On my desktop computer I can load the nwf file and I do not get the license error. or the internal error message.

Also this may be related or not.  But on my desktop computer I also get an windows - No disk error.  Actually I tried from two different workstations and I get this error when opening the nwf file.  However on neither station do I get the license error.

Last thought..when I try to save on the laptop it immediately gives me an error report window and no file is created.  But it appears to save when using the desktop.  I assume this is due to the license error.

********update********

I removed a file from the nwf file and when I removed it I no longer get the windows - no disk error.

I have not tried the file on the laptop again. I will do that and post back the results.

Ok,  after removing one of the nwc files from the nwf file I no longer get any errors when opening or saving on the laptop.  However,  for whatever reason I can no longer view our own nwc file that is part of the nwf file on the laptop.  It appears I can still view it on our desktop.

Also I have already tried to do both a repair and a reinstall from the control panel on the laptop.

And the problems are back again (not that they went away)..

Does it matter who creates the nwf file?  We are working with 4 or 5 other contractors and we are not the creator of the nwf file.  Everyone is providing an nwc file and the "coordinator" compiles it or makes the nwf file and then we open the nwf file and work on our own file from there.

After I downloaded a new nwf file from them everything was working on the laptop.  Then I tried on the desktop and it was back to the windows no-disk error on one file then a corrupt file on two others.  So I downloaded all of the newer nwc files from everyone and now I am back to the internal errors and license error on the laptop.

This makes no sense.

sssteve72 ,

Hello. Your original exporter issue was a result of Navisworks being installed before AutoCAD. During the install, the exporters scan your machine to determine what applications are installed that can utilize the exporter and it installs accordingly. A repair or a reinstall of the exporters should take care of any exporter problems you may have in the future, if you install other applications after Navisworks.

There is a possibility that the NWF file in question is somehow corrupt.

I am wondering if the file is corrupting somewhere. If it works on the laptop and then you move it to the desktop and it does not work- if you move this same non-working file back to the laptop, does it start working again? If not, something is possibly corrupting the file during transfer.

Could the files be somehow locked? Are there permission differences between the different systems? Do you have full admin rights on both machines? Have you tried logging in as a different user and retesting the files?

It is possible that there is an issue with either the laptop or desktop that is negatively affecting things. Do you have any other applications causing you grief?

I'm thinking corrupt nwf file somehow.  I wasn't actually moving the file just making a copy of it and I never tried to move it back.  I'll suggest the file is not getting corrupted between our two computers.  As we literally copy hundreds of files a day between machines on our network and none of them are getting corrupted.  It is Highly unlikely that this one file miraculously was getting corrupted on multiple occasions.  However we were obtaining the file thru an FTP download, that I would say that could be a cause of corruption.

The files are not locked or read only.

Permissions are the same.  user is setup as administrator on both laptop and desktop.

No other applications causing any problems.

I think the likely scenario is that the NWF file is somehow corrupt and possible one of the NWC files.  All of which were downloaded from the FTP site.  The project coordinator was having connection problems with their FTP site so I think it is most likely a corrupt file during download.

sssteve72,

Hello. I have had some new thoughts on this. Can you isolate the files that are erroring when you load them?

Take these files and move them to a different directory. Then load the NWF file and ignore the path requests. Does the file open? Move the NWC files back to the original directory and append them to the NWF. Save the NWF file.

Close Navisworks and reopen the NWF file to make sure things are okay.

I am also having the same issue with 1 Autocad MEP 2011 file, there is nothing in it but 3d solids.  Keep getting won't open because of internal error.  won't append just by itself, not within a NWF file.

The image titled error1 has to do with different versions of NavisWorks exporter being used to create the files. I remember having this issue before when we were creating NWC files with a 2012 Exporter Tool and trying to oad them i NavisWorks 2011.
