Linking O+M documents to 3D objects

Hi,

I'm looking for a way to attach / link my o+m documents to the 3D objects in the Navisworks Model. I know the 'Link' possibilities but this is to much work and above that the model will be filled with thousands of link icons. That's not an option. I know that I-Construct (australian Navisworks Add-ons) contains some funcionalities to link documents to objects. But I'm wondering wether there is anything possible without the use of extra Add-ons.

I really hope that Autodesk will work on the integration of documents and object data. Especially for the O&M phase, this is extremely important.

Hi,

This is something we are aware of and something that we hope to introduce in the future. At the moment the only way to do this in the 'out of the box' product is to add hyperlinks to the model, you may be able to work with the API to do this in a programatic way, if this is something you want to explore then the API forum may provide more help. Otherwise third party add ons like iConstruct are another option.

Mark and Lee,

In reference to this dilema, I have been able to  attach O&W Docs (PDF's) to my Models, both in Revit and Navisworks thru the use of links and urls................getting the docs attached is not the problem..at least for me.  The problem is actually the PATHING OF THE FILES TO THE DOCS.  The file pathing setting itself to 'ABSOLUTE' paths.  This doesn't work because when I vopy the project folder to anothe location, say the Owners System, I open my NWD file in Freedom, click the link, it cannot find the file (pdf) since it is not at the same exact location and patahing.  What we need is 'RELATIVE' pathing for these files.  I have research this out in the web, and found 1 reference from someone who said they had 'set their paths to relative', but they didn't say how, and I cannot find anything in the help to assit in this.  If there is a way to get the link pathing to be relative, could you please let us know?\\

Thanks,

Mike

MArk, just to follow up...are you trying to attach the O&M's thru the Native Model software, or NW?  I'm doing my attachments thru RAC and RMEP Prior to exporting to NWC.  Yes, right now there are many Links showing, but I'm experiementing with custom links (user-generated) for creating sets based on euip types/families, etc.  That way I can control the documents at the design level, as they should be, and also control the "pathing" issue...relative vs absolute....so that when I hand over the NWD to the client, they can use the NWD/DW/PDF/DOCs to do some he project.  Havins sloved those issues with pathing.  Not 100% easy at this point, but at least it is a start.

I save my documents in SharePoint, so my paths should be absolute. I can also attach docs to the objects, but I have to attacht 16000 docs to hundreds of thousands of objects. So manual labour is no option. Also, the accessing of the documents through the URL icons is not an option. Imagine the number of link icons....

To answer your next question: I want to attach docs through rules in Navisworks.

Can you share how you "set the link to relative"?

Thank you.
