IFC problems

I've tried opening different IFC files in Navisworks 2011 (NW) and the result is always the same: Navisworks hangs up at 0%, and then after several minutes crashes. I've tried 2x2, 2x3 and ePlancheck formats and IFC created from multiple software authoring programs - so I assume this is something related to the way NW is installed. Upon trying to modify the IFC file reader options in NW, the result is also a crash. Any ideas on what to install, reinstall or repair is appeciated.

Thanks

Hi virtuallycorrect,

The Service Pack 1 for Navisworks 2011 has various fixes for issues that may occur.  You can download it from here to see if it resolves the issue:

Autodesk® NavisWorks® 2011 Service Pack 1
- http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=DL15689177

The following page has a list of sources for example IFC files:

Are any of these IFC models able to load in Navisworks without a crash occurring.

For example, on the NIST page http://cic.nist.gov/vrml/cis2.html#IFC, if you right-click the “AISC_Sculpture_brep.ifc” link, save the IFC to your computer, and load it in Navisworks does the crash still occur?

If this sample IFC file doesn’t crash Navisworks, would you be able to post a non-sensitive IFC example that crashes Navisworks on your machine?

If the crash still occurs with this AISC_Sculpture_brep.ifc example, you can try uninstalling “Autodesk Navisworks Manage 2011” or “Autodesk Navisworks Simulate 2011” depending on your version installed from Control Panel > Add or Remove programs.  Then reinstall the software and check if the crash no longer occurs.
