How does Navisworks generate GUID's?

From ArcGIS I have generated a 3DS file, which I can open in Navisworks. But Navisworks does not generate a GUID for the Items in the file. We have an attribute in the 3DS file that is consitently and reliably unique for every object. This attribute is the name of the object (numeric name).

1. Can anybody (preferably someone from autodesk) tell me how Navisworks generates a GUID for a 3DS file?

2. Is it possible to influence the GUID generation algorithm? or create a custom made file import that generates this GUID when opening.

I have not been able to find any specific information regarding how GUID's are generated, I do not believe there is a way to import a file to tell NVM how to generate the GUID's.
