Best animation settings in navisworks

Hi all,

I'm making a walkthrough animation. A 1024x768 (screen resolution) movie but still after exporting into avi, it can't be played. It says it is corrupted.

This is the setting: OpenGL, Windows AVI, 30 fps, Anti-aliasing: 4x, Explicit, Width: 1280,Height: 1024.
And it takes longer time durign exporting.

What's the best configuration? I need you suggestions..

A memory error may be occuring or possibly the compression codec used is corrupt. I suggest that you try a differenent compressor. To do so, click the Options button in Output panel of the Animation Export window.

Standard versus Rendered AVI files

You can export the animation currently selected in the Viewpoints list to a standard AVI file by clicking File menu > Export menu option, and selecting the option to export an AVI file. If you have the Presenter 3 plug-in installed, you can also select to export to a Rendered AVI file.

The quality of standard AVI video resembles the image quality displayed in the main NavisWorks navigation window.

In contrast, rendered AVI output can take a long time to generate, especially when rendering models with multiple lights and complex materials. However, the results are visually impressive.

Standard AVI video is generated more quickly than rendered output, but the file size is about the same.


Export Options

When exporting to an AVI file, you can configure the following options:

Size - Used to specify the output resolution of the AVI file. Generally, it is unnecessary to create high-resolution animations, and, in most cases, standard screen resolutions, such as 640x480 or 800x600, are more than adequate.

Anti-Aliasing - Used to smooth the edges in a model. Larger anti-aliasing values result in a smoother image but take longer to export as each frame must be generated that number of times. Therefore, if you set anti-aliasing to a value of 8x, the exporting process will take eight times as long. In most cases, an anti-aliasing value of 4x is sufficient. Note: This option is only available when exporting to a standard AVI file as anti-aliasing is an implicit part of generating rendered images.

FPS - Used to specify the number of frames that will be shown per second of animation. A larger value results in a smoother animation, but requires that more images be generated. For a professional video to be used on DVD/TV, you may require frame rates of 25 (PAL/SECAM) or 30 (NTSC). However, in most cases, a value of 15 is sufficient.

Compression - One of the most complex choices when creating an animation is how you want to compress the video. Although this does not have a major effect of the time taken to create the output, it can have a huge effect on the picture quality and file size.

By default, exported AVI files are not compressed. To generate smaller AVI files, you need to have codec software, which compresses data, installed on your computer. The following is a list of the compression methods supported by NavisWorks® 3, along with an estimate of the file sizes likely to be generated with each method:

No Compression - This is the default output method. Each frame of the animation is stored as a full image. Since each frame is on average over 1MB in size, even short animations will take up a large amount of disk space.

File Size Estimate - 1GB with the following settings: 640x480, 24bit, 15fps, and 1 minute long.


Lossless Compression - The final AVI file retains the quality of the original output but the file size is much smaller. However, the final file will still be very large and difficult to distribute. Lossless compression is useful as an intermediate step to create an AVI file that can later be compressed using lossy compression. One freely available lossless compression codec is Huffyuv.

File Size Estimate - 500MB with the following settings: 640x480, 24bit, 15fps, and 1 minute long.


Lossy Compression - For demonstrations and distribution, a lossy compression method is your best choice as it generally offers small file sizes. The image quality will be reduced depending on the form of compression you use and the amount of movement in the animation. If you install an AVI codec on your computer such as DivX or Windows Media Encoder, you can select it in the Compression dialog box when generating an animation. You could also generate an AVI using no/lossless compression and then use a video encoding software, such as TMpeg or Real's Helix Producer.

File Size Estimate - 20MB with the following settings: 640x480, 24bit, 15fps, and 1 minute long.

Hi,

There is easy way to reduce file size without losing playing performance, just use WinRAR to compress your video file.

Most of video generate by NavisWorks shared very low bitrate, can compress into smaill size file.

For Example, I used NavisWorks 2018 to do Timeliner, then recorded animation and saved into AVI video file with resolution in 640 x 480 and playback length of 1 minute, file size is 300 MB.

After compressed this video file by using WinRAR v5.50, RAR format file size became 1MB only.

I transferred this 1MB file to another computer and extract, it created 300MB video file, it's resolution is still in 640 x 480, and play performance is same like original.
