Random connected edges after exporting from Maya

The picture below shows 2 objects, on the right is what I exported to an .obj file using the OBJExport plugin; on the left is the output and as you guys can see, there are edges that automatically connected between the letters with holes (E, A,) and thus creating a glitched out when viewed in object mode. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

The following are the steps I did before I exported the object:
Fix Mesh:

-select model
-mesh
-cleanup

Flip reverse normals:

*Checking:
-click lighting, desselect 2 sided lighting; check for pure black elements
*To reverse normals:
-select black part, put in face mode, click normals then reverse

Prepare pivot point:
-click object, press 'insert', press snap to points
-adjust pivot to middlemost bottom part of the object, then press 'w' Reset transformations and delete history:
-press modify, then reset transformations
-press edit, delete all by type, then history

Export:
-press file, export selection, select obj format
