Im trying to model a logo. basic sphere thats been booleaned/differenced. Before shutting down maya '3' was working fine to show shaded mode. now when i press '3' its deleting the object or atelast hiding it from view somehow. anyone got any ideas as to how to get it to go back to just shading?

3 Is the shortcut for smooth preview; 4 is the hotkey you want. Since booleans don't usually play nice with mesh smoothing operations it could simply be a result of that.
If the issue actually occurs when you enter shaded view mode, I'd suggest trying the switch while your object is still selected -- if the wireframe remains visible and the object simply has no shading, then the solution is to simply re-apply the default Lambert1 shader to the object.
