Model doesnt export properly in 3DS Max 2015

Hello,

I noticed that my version of 3ds Max 2015 exports a model's UVW mapping wrong to other engines like Unreal Engine 4. I created a relatievly simple model. I mapped it via the Unwrap UVW, then textured it. Inside of 3ds Max, the model looks properly. However, when I export it to FBX and open it in UE4, the model has its fce wrongly mapped. The main wood area is rotated and stretched, and the right side of the metal its super stretch all the way in. Not even to mention, the plane that acts like water deforms incorrectly when a wolrd position offset shader is applied.

I know it is my version of 3ds Max, because I had a friend export the model I made, give me the FBX, and then import it inside UE4 and it worked properly! I am puzzled by this! How can the same model, export differently, to the same engine, using the same export settings!

Here is what it looks like in 3ds Max 2015. http://puu.sh/ellOB/674d3b095d.jpg

Please help me out! I have all the updates installed! I on't know what I could to to fix this exporting issue!

Thanks!

Hi Motanum,

We have downloaded your 3ds Max and mapping, and I am testing your issue, can you directly post your jpg about the different result do you get.

I have sadly no access to your (*.jpg), as they are stock in a private ftp space.

I have generated an (*.fbx) file, can you test it trough you game engine.

Wishing you a good day,

Thanks for the reply!

You can find the original pictures attached below.

I created this model.

FBXImportedUE4Bad.jpg

I exported these FBX (I imported it to the game)

Friend exported this FBX (I imported it to the game)

Autodesk Support got replied to me, and I replied back, haven't heard from them, but it's important information, in my opinion, to know.

Hi, the problem is not UE4. The problem is with exporting to FBX in 3ds Max, as I sated, exporting from my 3ds Max version yields problems, but when a collegue exports my same model to FBX using the same export settings I used, it does work.

Make model -> I export to FBX -> I import to UE4, doesn't work
Make Model -> Friend exports it to FBX -> I import it to UE4 - It works

So the problem is with my 3ds Max failing to properly build FBX files.

I also tried exporting as an OBJ file and it did work, so why is FBX not working?

I believe I attached links to download the FBX file I generate, so, you could try opening that? When I open it in 3ds Max it also failes to open properly.

You can download the FBX here.

Thanks for the reply

The image attached on that mail.

The FBX you provided does import correctly into the Game Engine and 3ds Max. (Although the scale is off, but that's easy to fix)

What's important here is that the problem is with my 3ds Max in which it exports FBX incorrdectly. As even if I try to import the newly created FBX, it shows up wrong in 3ds Max, as I explained to the support email.

At this point, I am wondering if there should be some file or config setting to fix on my end or if I should fall abck to another version of 3ds Max. Or if you have a way to verify the integrity of the program files. The only plug ins I use are PhysX and VFShapes (Generates Vector Fields for use in UE4).

EDIT. I attached the rar with the FBX I keep exporting

Hi,

As I can see, it seems that ther could be two things to check.

The first one, will be to reset your 3ds Max user profile to default

Then if this doesn't work properly, check your fbx release installed one your system, it should be the "FBX Plug-in version: 2015.1" and try those settings:

Best Regards,

I followed the steps you told me to and it still won't export properly. The FBX PlugIn Version I have is 2015.1.

What should I try next?

I have exactly the same problem, 3ds Max 2015 Service Pack 3 incorrectly exported to FBX:

I reinstalled on the version of 3ds Max 2015 Service Pack 1 and everything works fine, exporting to FBX become correct.
But when I installed Service Pack 3 again, the problem is back. I am sure that the problem is in the Service Pack 3, please check.

I have the same problem as described after installind 3DS Max service packs (not sure which one is the problem).

The 3d object/mesh UVW unwrap looks as intended in 3DS Max, but wrong when I impost the .fbx file in Unreal Engine.
