Maya 2013 won't let me select anything but the entire model

hello i have been having problems with maya where i can't select  individual faces vertices or anythign other than the entire model

help on this would be greatly appreciated and as this is posted i am re-installing the programme

Quick (and stupid) question. Did you right click on the object and select Vertices or Faces ?

yeah  i have tried that thats how i found out about the problem i'm having

i have read of several ways to fix it but none have worked

1.select an object

2.press down right mouse button

3.move mouse to "face" option, and release mouse button

by the way, if you reinstall maya, don't forget delete or rename the user setting folder.

i do know how to go into face selection mode its just it will not selec whilst in face mode or edge mode or even vertex mode btu it will in object mode

And will it work better with a new scene or another polygon ?

ive drawn new polygons imported an object file  you name it it won't work

decided to use 2011 and it seems to work better as with camera selection only it works just fine but i reckon its soemthign to do with windows vista tbh as on my laptop which is 7 it works just fine

Maybe you could try deleting the preferences files into \Users\<username>\Documents\maya\2013\en_US\prefs, and possibly contents of subdirs. I recommend to copy them elsewhere before deleting.

Delete or rename the user setting folder.

Then when you lunch maya, select "create default preferences".

In the SELECT tab at the top of the screen, you will see the options OBJECT/COMPONENT for F8, VERTEX for F9, EDGE for F10, FACES for F11. It might not bet hebest way but it helps if the COMPARE TOOL or SELECT ALL come up when you hold the right mouse button.
