Help with UV Mapping - stretching is no good

I'm still a fairly new student to Maya, using the Autodesk 2013 version. I'd rather not use Unfold3D for my particular dilemma, but I am getting an issue where my model is being stretched inaccurrately in the UV Texture Editor. It'll create problems for me later when I'm ready for skinning. Any simple advice?

I appreciate your assistance if you can help.

When you do a UV projection set the UV editor  mapping to keep image width/height ration on

and insert projection on.

Bounding box on.

It seems that I also have to leave the scaling boxes on the projection screen alone (if that's what they're called.) It seems that rescaling the projection screen also warps my results.

So, thank you very much for being of great help!  🙂
