Harsh Edge while Modeling

I am creating a character in Maya 2015 and have modeled the right halve.  When I mirror it, a very harsh and noticebale edge is created.  Here is an image of the issue.  If anybody could help me, that would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure your vertices in the center of model were welded , select model go to top menu bar "Normals"> soften edges...also make sure that when you copied and  flipped the other half of the face that the Normals are facing out like the rest of the model..Display>Polygons>Face Normals

I've had similar problems. It looks to me as it your vertexes along the edge need to be seamed out. After mirroring, try selcting a centerline vertex and the one on either side then use the scale tool to line them up... see if gets rid of the ridge.
