Hard/soft edges and extrusion

Hi there! I just tried to model a simple Box thats open...create cube, make inner extrusion, and already before rendering its visible that there`s something wrong. When rendered it looks like a f...ing mess. Fortunately I came around with the really great "facer"- script (freeware), highlighted all edges and executed hard- or soft edges. After it was a clean, clear shape. But why is this? I don`t remember, having had this issues before. If I knew why this happens I maybe could understand better the way Maya is getting around with this job! Could somebody tell me?

Somehow when you extruded the normals got soften all the way and lost the hard edges... All you needed to do was to reset the normals to hard edges........Normals>hard edges.... Learning about normals is easy and essential
