I'm not sure it's a bug or not, but this won't happen before maya 2015.
ALSO!
turn on "symmetry", select a vertex on the model's left side (means the right side on your screen), hold Alt key and click Arrow Key to move the vertex, it's going to a negative direction ! but no problem on the right side.
