Can't open .max file

I'm trying to open a scene in 2013 but I get an error that the file was saved in a newer version of Max. Is there a way to open the scene?

Not without access to a later version, then the scene could be saved as a 2013 compatible file. Ask whoever created the file do just that.

I don't know who made the model. I downloaded it from CG site.

If it was free then zip it and attach it to a reply asking if someone would mind converting it for you. If it was paid for (obviously do not post it here) try contacting either the site or the author. Most such sites do state the Max requirements - you need to check them before downloading.

You'll need a newer version of 3ds Max, or someone to convert it for you. Have you attempted to import it?

I have many .max files created years ago with a scanner, and I downloaded a free trial version of autodesk 3ds max under the impression it would open these files. No luck importing or opening in the software. Suggestions? R
