Array Merge Modifier (concept)

Hi,

A modeller at our studio requested a method of arraying clones of a base mesh (as part of one object) by using a special modifier (which does not exist yet) – as opposed to other cloning methods. They are currently do this process via long manual methods using symmetry, slicing and other techniques which are time consuming – so they want an all-in-one solution instead. We've came up with a concept for a new modifier to function the way we'd like.

Does ayone know how this kind of process could be done using current tools (or even other packages)?

I'm guessing to build a tool like this would require plugin SDK and C++ programming knowledge?

There is a clone modifier out there that you can purchase. I don't remember who created it how ever.
