duplicate part within assembly not visisble in browser

I have a file with parts and subassemblies that has a long history that has expanded with many parts and subassemblies.
I have just noticed when I changed the position of a part in a subass that there is a duplicate part within the subass that was hiden under the one I moved. The duplicate part is not a listed part in the subass in the browser structure. Erasing the duplicate will erase the original, thus I cant get rid of the duplicate. If I activate the subass the duplicate part is not displayed but the wanted part is. So what is this, and hwo do I get rid of the unwanted duplicate. It has me stumped!!!

Looks like a corrupt file, use RECOVER and/or
AMRECOVER until all errors are resolved. The other option is to start from
scratch.

I have had some assemblies where MDT generated a complete set of dublicate
solids in the same positions as the original MDT parts.
To resolve this I turn off visibility of all parts, and the delete what is
left visible on the screen.

Best regards

I am sorry but I have no idea of how they were created, I only noticed them
when moving or hiding part, so the drawings could have been corrupted for a
long time when discovered.

I can't remember if the replication only occurs when dealing with local
parts in an assembly or if it happens on external parts as well.

It's possible that one of them was exploded back to a 3D solid at one time,
or imported as a 3D solid and made into a ampart.
