Ok, the first question would be, are you using a Mac at school? If so and you are using a PC at home, remember that Macs have different directory structures than PC's.
Now if that's not the case (no Mac in the loop), then I'd try creating a new scene file on your system at home and see if you can import the file from school into the new scene file. Likewise you can also try the reverse...at school try creating a new scene file, import your project then see if that new scene file will open at home.
Another thing to check would also be the OS between the 2 systems (school and home). If they are both PC's, make sure they are using the same file system to write the files (NTFS for example). Also, if you are using a flash drive, make sure you are properly ejecting the flash drive and not just yanking it off the computer (that goes quaduple for working on Macs!!!). If you pull the flash drive out while the file is still writing, you WILL corrupt the file...same goes for USB drives as well.
The Maya version shouldn't really affect anything...I've bounced back and forth between 2011 and 2013 here at home and 2014 at the college I attend. Since you said you've already re-installed at home (which probably wasn't your problem to begin with, particularly if you were able to open or create other scenes), I'd be looking at what's different between your computer at home and the one at school.
Good Luck!
