Hey,

A few days before, i installed Maya 2015. First everything worked well, but yesterday Maya started to crash when i try to smooth shade my object. (Smooth quality display setting / hotkey: 3) I tried to reinstall Maya and many other things, however it still crashes.

plz help me. I'm so desperate.

Thx

Maya 2015 may crash turning on Smooth Mesh Preview (3 key) for some meshes if the Subdivision Method is OpenSubdiv.

To avoid the crash either delete or rename the UV Set named ‘map11’, or change the Subdivision Method to Maya Catmull-Clark.

1. Select the mesh
2. Open the UV Set Editor. Create UV’s ->UV Set Editor
3. Select  the UV Set named “map11”
4. Delete or Rename

or

1. Select the mesh
2. Open the Attribute Editor for the mesh shape.
3. In the Smooth Mesh attributes change Subdivision Method to Maya Catmull-Clark

Thanks to QA for the tip on this!

Cheers!

I just got back into 3D been out of it for some years. I got the same problem and non of these tips have helped.

Any other recommendations?

Very frustrating, simple geometry crashing program when basic smoothing.

Hi!

Please upload a scene-file containing the object.

Hi!

Glad it works with an updated version of Maya.

I checked the file and 3 of your objects (like Blades) have a second corrupted UV Set, which very likely caused the problem.

Correct the UV's or delete the corrupted UV Sets ("map11").

Thanks! Will do 🙂

Edit UVs > Delete UVs

Is this all it takes? I selected all blades and hit Delete UVs.

Hi!

1. Delete UV Sets, not UV's. The easiest way is to use UV -> UV Set Editor.

2. Only one blade needs to be selected (they are instances).

3. Do this for the other 2 objects in the scene too that have "map11".

Ok so

Create UVs > UV set editor

I deleted the "Map11", so do that with all objects in the scene? The new elements I created some also have Map11.

What is Map11?

Thanks!

Hi!

It's a UV Set you created at some time, maybe by using modeling or UV tools.

Please read the Maya Online Help / Documentation for more details about what a UV Set is.

I have not done any UV mapping yet, just basic box modelling right now with defaults.

Thanks!
