Severe freezing - Maya 2017

I'm getting several freezes per hour with Maya 2017 Update 1. I have no idea what it could be, I have a i7 4790K cpu and GTX 1070 video card, all running at factory levels. latest nvidia drivers. Its a small 15MB scene file with maybe 5000 poly objects but nothing complex as far as shaders, lighting or effects. In VP2 I am using Legacy GL mode which is necessary for working with Redshift.

It happens a lot of the time when I group objects together, but sometimes is entirely random. Any ideas what part of the system I should test? The system has never crashed outside of Maya since purchased 18 months ago, also use it for gaming. Maya 2016 E2 has also never crashed.

Hello @arcon76,

Thank you for posting to the Area forums.

This is a known issue that is currently logged and being looked into by our development team. The issue seems to be a memory leak when translating groups in a scene that is at a bigger scale. I would recommend setting up Auto Save in Maya so that data loss is minimal or working at a smaller scale. Unfortunately, there isn't currently a workaround for this issue, but like I said the development team is actively looking into a resolution for the issue.

Cheers,

David Santos

Thanks for your reply David. Well here's hoping its in the next patch and we don't have to wait till the 2018 release for them to fix it 😄

Any news on this issue? Getting pretty annoyed with the freezing every 20 min.

The same thing is happening to me. I also use Redshift. I have two GTX 960 4Gb one in headless mode. It happens when copying an instance and then rotating it. The first copy is ok and in the second try it freezes. What is unusual is the raising in the memory use from some mb to almos 4 gb in one blow. I reduced the size of the scene to a minimum and it have no effect.

Is it supposed to be fixed with Update 2? Because I still experience those freezes. Just as described in the original post, there is not much geo in the scene, it's just a blocking scene, but it's a village scenery at 1unit=1cm. I am on a Xeon machine equipped with a GTX 1080. It's literally not possible to do anything because the scene will freeze on the first try to transform any object.

Scaling the scene is not an option.

Hello AD!? What about some community update on this issue? Because it's a serious one.

Just because this discussion is set to "solved" doesn't mean the issue itself is solved, in case this isn't clear.

I just read the Update 2 release notes again. Nothing sounds like as if there have been efforts to address this issue. Can we expect a fix for Update 3? What's the schedule? What's the bug number?

Thanks.

Still waiting for a statement.

This issue renders the app almost unusable in certain situations, because by now the legacy viewport is also in such a miserable state that sometimes you can not use it as a fallback solution anymore.

A 3D software without a reliable working viewport. Says it all!

This is what will be shown in the output window in case of a freeze

Why is this topic marked as closed? The issue is still there and many users have trouble with it. Will there be a fix in update 3?

Not fixed in Update 3.

Unbelievable.

With update 3 all freezing and lags has been solved.  Except if I use the legacy mode it makes the viewport view very slow. I also got rid of everything Nvidia and installed the latest driver completely fresh. It react faster.

The only thing I cannot do is to put the proxies in mesh mode because it crash but I think this is a problem with the video board lacking memory not Maya. Although I dont really know how much Maya handle in term of meshes.

That's nice.

Is there a way to still save the scene by the command port or sth? Never used it.

Because the freezes also occur randomly when opening the Hypershade or the RenderView and of course always in the most unwelcome moments.

Hi Nando,

Can you give us more detail on your issue? Which version of Maya are you using? What OS? Does this happen in any scene, or only in certain scenes?

Thanks,

L

Are you kidding?

I think the issue is quite good covered in this thread. If you need more, check BSPR-27110.

Thanks for the issue number. I'm not on the support staff, I'm a product manager, but this came by my desk and I'm trying to ensure it gets to the right people here as it sounds bad. I understand you are pissed off, but please keep the tone amicable on these forums.

POSSIBLE WAYS TO ALLEVIATE THIS PROBLEM

hey gang,

try these:

Turning off consolidate world in the VP2.0 options.

MAYA_VP2_LOCALE_GRID_SIZE=5000 (which is the value that previous Maya versions used, we changed the default of 5000 down to 500 but scene scale will affect this, such as scaling up the objects by a factor of 10X).

You could also try the envVar (which will work regardless of the scale of the scene) (not sure if it works with 2016_r2:
MAYA_ENABLE_MULTI_DRAW_CONSOLIDATION=0

On Windows

To set an envVar on Windows, go to your Maya prefs dir C:\yourUsername\Documents\maya\2017\

in here there should be a Maya.env file, open it in notepad++ (or other text editor) and add the one (or both) of the variables above like:

MAYA_VP2_LOCALE_GRID_SIZE=5000

MAYA_ENABLE_MULTI_DRAW_CONSOLIDATION=0

and save the .env file

naturally, if you want to remove it, you delete these lines from the .env file

On Mac or Linux

Open a terminal and before typing in the path to Maya's executable to start the program type:

export MAYA_VP2_LOCALE_GRID_SIZE=5000, export MAYA_ENABLE_MULTI_DRAW_CONSOLIDATION=0;

to unset the envVar just kill the terminal and relaunch Maya in a new terminal, or you could use the unset command

unset MAYA_VP2_LOCALE_GRID_SIZE etc...

refer to the Users Manual if my description on setting envVars is not clear.

cheers!

Thanks John, already throught about posting your suggestions here.

Nevertheless this doesn't stop the freezes which randomly occur when opening certain editors like the Hypershade or the RenderView. I know this might be another issue, but the error in the Output Window looked just the same. Need to catch another one though to copy the message.
