Overlay views in drawings

Overlay views in drawings

I recently had the requirement to produce a drawing of a circlip, showing both the working and free view dimensions.

The part was created as an ipart, but in the drawing I was unable to overlay the "free" view over the "working" view, Instead I had to place the one view (free position), then create a sketch of the circlip in it’s working position.

It would have been helpful if I was able to place both ipart views accurately on top of each other using constraints, and then make one of them a dashed line....simple!

Hi craig.perriman,

Here's the workflow that I would use for this. You might comment back and say if this would work for you, or if your new idea is still required. If your idea is still required, feel free to "beat up" my suggestion to explain where it falls short of your needs.

  1. Create an assembly with both versions of the circlip
  2. Create the View Representation with the free view hidden.
  3. Create a Posistional Representation called called "Free" (but don't create any constraint overrides as you normally would for a posistional reps).
  4. Create the View Representation with the working view hidden.
  5. In the drawing, place a view of the assembly using the the working view rep.
  6. Then use the Overlay View tool to place a view of the same assembly using the the free view rep. and the postional rep.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Would also be nice to be able to section both overlay views together.
