We have just upgraded from Inventor 2010 to 2014. Phew!
Not really an idea, but wondered why Autodesk in their wisdom replaced the CSV (Comma Delimited) output option from BOM Export with Unicode CSV!
Selecting either option now produces a Unicode CSV output
Inventor 2010 (historic file)
Item,Description,Material,QTY,Cost Center,Stock Number,Part Number
1,"Dished Head, Inner : 1900mm Outside Diameter, 6 thk",S235JR,2,1101,01047,
4,"Cradle Assembly, 1900 Dia. 400 High, 300 Wide, 6 THK",,3,,,S390-067
Inventor 2014 & 2015 now produces (from the same assembly) this type of file content, either from the Comma delimited or Unicode menu option.
Item,Description,Material,QTY,Cost Center,Stock Number,Part Number
1,Dished Head, Inner : 1900mm Outside Diameter, 6 thk,S235JR,2,1101,01047,
4,Cradle Assembly, 1900 Dia. 400 High, 300 Wide, 6 THK,,3,,,A2/9351/2-7
for those of you that haven't noticed, any description string that contained a comma, was previously 'embraced' with speech marks.
1,"Dished Head, Inner : 1900mm Outside Diameter, 6 thk",S235JR,2,1101,01047,
Any piece of software that can read csv files, now see's the comma after the letter 'r' as the start of a new column = disaster.
The only work-around is to export the file as a native Microsoft excel *.xls, open the file from within Microsoft Excel and 'save as' a proper csv (comma delimited) file.
It seems, the export to CSV (comma delimited) menu options has been retained but the code behind it saves purely as the Unicode option just below.
