Worst Feature List - Performance Topic

I´d like to know if someone knows what´s the best/worst feature to use (that we should use/avoid).

For example:
Pattern or mirror
loft or sweep

A list of best/worst features will be welcome!

I know the coil command really slows down IDW's and you can get carried away
with the pattern feature if you have a lot of holes say in a boiler tube end
plate.

Emboss (especially with Wrap to face).

Boundary patch with tangents.

Feature patterns with large number of instances.

Each is used for a particular application/workflow.

Typically feature or part patterns enhance performance over using individual
parts. I personally avoid sketch patterns but instead prefer to use feature
patterns in a part.

Lofts usually use more resources, especially when a lot of cross sections
are involved.

Performance really depends mostly on the complexity of the design and
developing good practices for design and assemblies.

Yes, I didn't include Coil, Loft, Sweep in my list because
-I expect Coils to be slow
-I have found that if a Sweep or Loft takes very long to complete I Ctrl Alt Del (unfortunately Escape or Cancel or whatever doesn't work) and try a different sketch/modeling method. Almost without exception I can find a way that solves a Loft or Sweep relatively quickly or doesn't solve at all. I have found if it takes too long to solve I run into problems down the road that kill the part anyhow so I don't even fool around with a Loft or Sweep feature that takes too long to solve ("too long" is subjective of course).

I do want to add the new Bend feature to list of features that take too long to solve.

Where can I get a "good pratices" material.

I have some problems with the workflow, the things works but not optimized...

I think it´s time to make things right!

Thanks

To practice, look at things around you, keyboard, mouse, PC-case, cell
phone.

Great material Blair!

Where can I find more?

I´ve thought a lot about produce assemblies ready to detail on drawing.

I´ve use Skeleton and Muscular Modeling (Sean Dotson) and I´ve liked very much, it´s a great resourse.

See link and download the file:

I used some resourses to create the tubes like work planes, axis and points.
I would like to know your opinions about this and how can I make it better.

That is just an example, a simple solid.

If I need to detail that, how can I creat my assembly?

Will I need Tube & Pipe module? What´s the best solution?

Dennis,

I´ve seen you are an Inventor Expert.

Where can I get some advanced material to teach myself?

Here is how I might create this if a single solid is needed. I did not create any work geometry. It was created on edu version so delete after analysis of the technique.

If you need individual parts for an assembly I would either:
- Derive as Work Surfaces and then Thicken or whatever needed to get each part as needed
-Start with a master sketeton sketch and Derive into new parts as needed and create each part for the assembly.

For stuff this simple I see no advantage to Tube and Piping in Routed Systems although I would suggest you talk to your VAR as I haven't seen your entire product. In any case I would learn skeletal modeling making a decision to upgrade.

But all of this doesn't make sense with your thread title? It looks like you do easy work that should not tax Inventor. Just need to improve the techniques used.

Forgot the attachment.

To unzip right click on the filename and select Extract All.
You could have followed the reverse proceedure to attach directly to your thread. That is, right click on the file name and select Send to Compressed (zipped) folder and attach the resulting boiler.zip file.

Well, I guess I just wasted a bit of my time. Just ran iProperties on your file and see that you are not using the current release of Inventor and failed to mention that.

Inventor 11 file.

Notice also that I used Midplane in the Rectangular Pattern.

Also, very important, for large numbers of pattern elements, make sure that you choose the "optimized" option (instead of identical option) under the expanded menu of the pattern creation window. (you can also edit the existing patterns and change this).

Hope it helps.

Your model are very good, simple and organized!

I´ll try to improve my techniques, do you know some good material to this?

I know it isnot agree with the post subject but is the last time I ask this.

If you could send by email:

Thanks a lot!

Simply Great!!!

Well done!!!

JD, today I done some plate´s estructures and I would like your opinion, and who wants to, about my soluction.

I´ll create a new post tomorow about Estructures made by welding plates (I´ll look a better name to this) and a right procedure to do this, and I would like to invite everybody to comment.

Thanks a lot!
