worm gear

Hi,

 

I was trying to make a worm gear with a expanding distance every round.

 

Its kinda hard to explain, because I don't know the right terms in english.

So I drew it in paint (see the atachments). A picture says more than a thousand words right?

The function of this is to give more space between the bottles that come off a assambly line.

 

I hope you guys know how to make this.

Attached is a quick and rough example that should demonstrate the basic approach (you'll see a couple of issues with the path if look close).

 

You didn't mention what version of Inventor you're using so I did this in the oldest version I have available, so I hope you can open it.

 

Note too that if you have Inventor 2013 you can use an equation curve to better define the helix:

Hi Curtis, if you want to feed bottles with a progressive helix, it's more complicated. The bottles need to pass through without being destroyed.

Later: I just noticed, that this sample has constant pitch of the helix. But somewhere in my "treasure box" is a progressive pitch version, too.

Hi Walter,

 

I'm certain it will be more involved than my simple example, but are you saying that a variable helix sweep cut will not work? If so, is there another approach that you can recommend to help flamingo12 with this task?

Normally, a circle is placed perpendicular to the sweeping path, and is swept around. But if you look at the result, you'll never see cylindrical cutouts with room for the bottles. Just look at your sample, and imagine bottles together with it.

 

What do we need?

1. A progressive helix path

2. Array of cylinders (bottles) along this path, oriented around the main axis

3. Multibody combining these cylinders with the base cylinder (raw material)

I was trying the equation curve, I kinda figured out how it works. The only problem I get is (maybe im asking a very stupid question right now) how to make the that should be in this case a circle, in the attachment its a square.

I figured it!

I needed to set a new work plane, and make the circle i needed.
