Working with .idw's.

I've avoided using this aspect of IV to create final drawings for more than a year. I simply create my parts/assemblies and detail them in AutoCAD. I'm making an effort to use it now. I've successfully setup a drawing border and title block thanks to Sean Dotson's tutorials (thank you, Sean).

Now my question is. How do you line up views of different parts on the same sheet? There doesn't seem to be a way to associate a line from one part to a line on another.

Thanks in advance.

The short answer is thre isn't a method to align by lining up a common
or selected line between the part views.
You can accompplish this functionality by using a "construction"
sketch drawn to represent the projected line you wish to align by and
then moving the views manually.

When you say "manually" do you mean there is no way to zero it out on the line? I can only just get it close?

What I have is a part within a part. I want the outside part to show hidden lines and the inside part to show only visible edges. I haven't seen a way to do this if they are part of the same assembly.

This is the functionality I need in a drawing environment.

Deckart,

Welcome to the (many) shortcomings of Inventors IDW
enviroment. This cannot be done and like so many other things in the MDT drawing
enviroment you gotta wonder why the great things in MDT were not bought across
into INV's world.

Disclaimer...

Before Sean sends the Inventor police around to my
house to upgrade my Inventor labotomy, I know Inventor is better than
MDT in many ways, but there were still a few really great time saving features
that could (and should) have come thru to Inventor 😉

Hey guys,

Remember the comment last week about crashing while saving? "NICE!" is not what I was just thinking as I lost a complete IDW because I wanted to be safe. That's got to be the nastiest "Feature that's ever been put into a piece of s............ OK, SOFTWARE. It's actually worse than some viruses.

Just venting before going home in disgust.

LOL, Cool so we can expect to see Sdotson using MDT soon. Hows yer LISP
coding hehe..
Meant no offence Sean, just sometimes any idea that came from MDT gets kinda
jumped on in here regardless if it was good functionality or not. And
looking at some of the great things in MDT that are missing in INV it would
seem the developers felt that way too.

While some may have that attitude Brian I do see some good coming from MDT.

However many people want features from MDT put into IV just because they
miss them. Just because it was there is not always a good reason. We need
to move forward (sometimes taking stuff with us) but often by leaving the
baggage behind.

If that weren't the case we'd still be driving carbureted cars. (Well at
least for our daily drivers)

True, I would rather drive my holley carbed 327 Chev powered Holden Monaro
to work every day than my wifes fuel injected Daihatsu (apart from having to
invest in BP to weekly fuel the thing!)

P.S for those who don't know what a Monaro is, check here to see what you
have been missing out on....

Are you saying that in MDT you can turn off hidden line display of only certain
parts in a view?

NM, I just figured that out. That would have been very helpful 2 days ago. 🙂

I wrote a lisp utility for MDT that allows you to select a part in a view
and turn off hidden lines represented in that view for the part that you
selected.

Solidworks allows you to control hidden line visibility in a view on
part-by-part or feature-by-feature basis.

IV out-of-the-box can't do it nor can it be programmed through its limited
API.

Such hidden line visibility controls have been a long standing desire of
ours.

Would it be possible to get that lisp from you? I suppose you could post in the
MDT group.
