Working out volume

Hi everybody, How would I work out the volume of a complex shape? Is there an automatic function to work this out in inventor? I have recently just converted some .STL files into .IPT files. Clicking on iproperties> physical tab , just shows the volume, area and mass as "N/A". Could anyone explain how to find out the volume? Thanks.

Did you click on the "update" button in the top right of that tab?

Hi -niels-

Yes, I just tried that, it shows " 0.000 mm^3 (Relative Error = 0.000000%) ".

Is there any solution to this?

..

Do you have a solid body?

It is now converted to .IPT, so I am guessing it is a solid body, yes.

No need to guess.

Show screenshot of your browser.

Or

better yet,

attach the *.ipt file here.

JDMather,

When converting the STL I selected Solid/Surface and unticked the 'Delete Original' tickbox...for some reason it automatically converts it into a Composite. I think this may be the problem. How do I ensure it converts into a Solid rather than automatically a Composite even when Solid surface is selected.

You still have not attached a screen shot of your browser as suggested.

You still have not attached the actual file.

So the only thing I can do is guess.

My guess is that your stl import does not form an unambiguous "watertight" envelope and therefore no solid was created.

JDMather, I appreciate your help. I am not able to attach anything on the replies for some unknown reason. I apologise for that. How can a watertight envelope be created?

Do you have Autodesk 360 installed?
You could post your example files on there and give a link to those.
I don't have any experience with STL files or the mesh converter, so i don't know if i can help.
But it would be easier if you can supply an example file.

Hi -niels-,

That makes sense, I shall do that. Thank you!
