Work axis normal to a surface patch

I have a complex surface that consists of many patches.  Think of the cheek on your face.  I need to place a work axis perpendicular to one of the patches on the surface of the cheek.  It could be on the interior of the patch or it could be at one of the vertices of the patch.

What about placing a point and then place the axis through that point.

Thanks for the suggestion.

How is the axis defined to be perpendicular to the surface at that point?

There are an infinite number of points on a face, therefore an infinite number of perp axis, therefore more information on location is needed.

Lets say you want it in the center of a loop defining the boundary of the face.

If you have determined where exactly you want the point to be on the face then it will be perpendicular at that exact point.  But with a curved surface like you are describing there are thousands of points that make up that curved surface.

You might end up creating three points and then the vector intersection between them can determine the point you want.  Then maybe you can create a plane and controll all of this with the dimensional values you input.

You could now create the axis by selecting the face and the point, but let's make it even more interesting.

Lets say you want a point on the face where the axis pierces the face.

Start the Point comman, right click and select Axis.

Select the original loop point and the face (might need to click the face twice).

I received the following method from the Autodesk Support:

To create an Axis normal to a surface you need to do the following:
* From the Axis pull-down select "Axis - normal to Plane through Point".
* Now pick the surface and the point you created.
You will now have an Axis normal to the surface.

It does what I need it to do even thought my "surface" is a irregular "patch".
