For some future version of Inventor I have an idea:

I'd really like a dialog box that would be for driven constraints. What
I'm thinking is that although you can drive any constraint that you
place, most of the time I find myself driving only 2-3 per assembly, and
when building the assembly I'm always wanting to move my parts through
their motion so I can see how it is operating. But, it's kind of a pain
to find the driven constraint, pick the drive constraint option, then
play it. Equally a pain is to grab the item (with the driven constraint
supressed) and drag it around the screen because inventor sometimes
moves the part around erratically, and it's difficult to stop it at
discrete locations, like end of travel of a cylinder.

My proposal is like this:

driven constraint 1 : min |--------[]-------| max
driven constraint 2 : min |--[]-------------| max
driven constraint 3 : min |--------------[]-| max

That way, once you start to use a constraint as a driven constraint, you
can bring up this dialog box and slide the slider bar to move the part
from it's min-value to its max value. Plus, since all the driven
constraints would be on the same dialog box, you could, say, extend and
retract cylinder 1, then swing open and closed door 2, etc, etc, from
the same box to see all the moving parts from the same dialog box.

Thanks.

Great idea. I never thought of that but shure would be a very nice
addition.

Jason:

I like it. Perhaps, just like you can RMB on a part in the browser to
make it grounded, you could RMB on the constraint and elevate it to a
driven status, thus flagging it as being available in your dialog box.

Hear, hear old boy! Sounds like a (Edited by Moderator) fine idea to me.

I agree with Jason - Autodesk might like to consider putting it in Inv9

I particularly like the idea of creating constraints with minimum and maximum limits regardless of whether they are driven or not. Often, there is more than one solution to a constrained part such that it can 'flip' to the wrong one. For example, if you have a cam with a roller follower driving a plunger, the follower will sometimes flip to the wrong side of the cam (so that the cam is cutting the plunger). If a min/max constraint could be applied to the position of the plunger, it could not flip to the wrong side.

Hi Jason,

Great idea!

From day 1 I have wanted to add more functionality to the driven constraint
area of the product.

In addition to your slide GUI idea, I wanted to add a conditional scripting
capability to allow simultaneous and inter-connected constraint drives too.

Hopefully we'll see all of these in a future release!

Hmm, seems we have done that for you...

Wanna buy it? (no I'm serious)

Kent I have about 1/2 the code written for this already.

Could be interesting...

Okay...

If everyone is having so much fun with my idea, when can I have a plugin
to use on my workstation?

If you are willing to "Beta" test ... pretty much any time you are ready. 8^)

I'm willing... where can I download, and how do I install it?

Thanks!

I have added the program to my iCode page
http://www.mymcad.com/kwik/iCode/icode.htm

It turned out to be a bit more involved than I originally thought, and
has a couple of issues I am still looking into, as outlined on the web
page.

Keep in mind it has had very little testing time, so please let me know
if you run into any problems.
