Why can't I dimension my part?!?!

I am new to Inventor, and am having a very frustrating time dimensioning my part in a drawing. I create a new drawing of my assembly and create some projected views. When I go to "Draft View" to dimension the drawing, either I can't select the geometry to dimension it, or I get an error saying "Cannot contrain or dimension reference geometry". All I want to do is dimension my part so that it can be built. What am I doing wrong, and why is this so difficult?

Harry,

Draft views are special "views" that enable IDW's to become a psuedo
AutoCad in that you can scale, dimension (parametrically) and create 2D
entities.

Once you drop views of your assembly, just hit "D" and dimension the
views directly.
