What is your upgrade strategy?

I am still using Inventor 5.3 Sp2 and I guess I'm not the only one since this discussion group still exists. I have avoided Inventor 6 because many users report that it is unstable and there are problems upgrading existing projects. But now that version 7 is on the horizon I'm wondering if I should make a move. What do other Inventor users think about upgrading? Now, never, wait for service packs, wait for version 20?

Most IV6 stability bugs were fixed in SP1. I have no stability problems, nor have I had any problems upgrading projects (SP1 fixed a lot in that area as well). R7 probably won't be out for a few more months (they just released the first beta). If you haven't tried R6 with SP1 (SP2 is also available) then I'd suggest giving R6 another go.

HI

The magazine "Autodeskdesigner" says:
"Autodesk will release 14 new versions in march, starting on the 17th" and
"Inventor 7 series and Inventor 7 Pro will be released in april/may!" and
our reseller claims that release 8(EIGHT!!)  is due in the
fall.......

Thank god for subscription....

What is "Inventor series 7 Pro"?

I have no complaints with R6. The upgrade process was no worse than any
of the other upgrades, it did require closer adherence to Autodesk's
instructions.

I just wasted a few days on a project which made use of the
rotation-to-linear motion constraint. It turned out there were
problems with that in 5.3. My support company said the problem is
solved in 6, but I would have to re-create the project in 6 because
just migrating the drawing wouldn't work (though he did give me some
work-arounds).

My company has a very clear design cycle... we work on one project
for about 3 years and then move on to a new one. In that situation,
automatically upgrading is NOT a good thing. There is a large amount
of work involved with discovering the bugs and other problems that get
introduced in every new version. But the biggest concern is when a
bug causes drawings to be released with bad information on it.

So, we will stay un-upgraded for another 2 years. Then Autodesk
will need to truly earn my upgrade fee. If they don't, I may sit on
my current version for the next design or abandon the Autodesk ship in
favor of another brand.

Joe

p.s. I sure there are those of you who were MUCH better off by
upgrading your software to a current version. But, I've been burned by
"upgrades" enough times to know it can be a bad choice.
