Using a solid component to cut a different component in assembly

I am trying to make port rims for pipes that can be swapped in and out of an assembly.  However, the ports will all be different sizes and located differently so I need the cut to be part of the port rim component, but affect the entire assembly it is part of.  I've been trying to get this to work for the better part of a day now, any help is greatly appreciated.  Here's a picture of what im talking about. I'm running Inventor 2008 by the way.

I would probably use Derived Component and then Split or Sculpt.

One way maybe:

In your port rim component, extrude as surface the area that needs to be cut in the tube. In your assembly, edit the tube and "copy object" the surface. Use sculpt to remove the opening in the tube. This will be associative as well.

I don't have 2008, so you couldn't open my files.
