Turn off iPart children folders

How do I turn off the creation of iPart children folders? When I generate an iPart instance, I want it to be created on the same level as the iPart, with no folder creation.

Thanks in advance. -Jon Evans.

Check out Proxy Libraries in Help, it entails adding a separate Library path
in your project file.

a.. "The iPart Factory may be located in a library folder, and the parts you
generate are kept in an associated proxy library. The two library folders
bear the same name, except the name of the proxy library has a leading
underscore (_) character."

Why is this a requirement?

Because our Product Management system requires a flat file structure. I got the answer I needed elsewhere. Thanks anyway.

Dear,
could you please tell me the way how to make this flat structure. If possible with some image.

Please... Please.....

Thanks in advance.

There is a registry key allowing you to generate flat structure of iPart or iAssembly.
Close Inventor.
Execute regedit.exe in a command line.
Go to ->HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersionxx.0\System\Preferences\Catalog\
Add a DWORD, "FlatStructure" and set the value to 1.
Restart Inventor.

After that, iPart or iAssembly members will be generated at the same level as the factory file. Please note that this switch is only effective on R11 or later.
Thanks!

In doing so, does content center parts still go to the publish content center location that is designated in the project file?

Yes! The switch only applies to iPart and iAssembly. It has no bearing on where CC gets published.

Johnson, a question about this: for depts w/ multiple users will all users have to do this?

If one user has this setting on and the other users do not (or vise versus), will all files resolve correctly?

Does this affect any existing iParts and child members?

TIA

I assume the setting is only for one particular user. However, if the iParts are shared by multiple users, it will be best to enable the setting for all users. Otherwise, iPart factory might look for the member file in the folder for one user while it might look for members at the same level for the other.

Johnson,

I was just trying to change my registry to get the flat file structure for my iparts and I do not have a Catalog folder under Preferences. Do you know why that might be and how can I fix this so I can get the flat file structure?

Nathan

This is strange. I am not sure why "Catalog" isn't available for you.
Could you make a folder "Catalog" under Preferences and then add the DWORD?
Thanks!

After getting a good nights sleep, all the while dreaming about why I did not have a Catalog folder in my Registry, it occured to me this moring that I could have been in the worng registryv version. Well, when I went back to my registry and looked in Version 13.0 instead of Version 12.0 magically all of the missing folder, including the Catalog Folder, appeared.

All is well in my world. Thank you Johnson.

When I was using 2009 the registry edit worked great and the ipart children were in the same folder as the ifactory. Does anyone know how to get this to work using 2010 and Vista 64?

I just checked out an ifactory and the children, made a revision, updated the drawings, and tried to vault the files. I vaulted the ifactory first, and it vaulted all of the children at the same time which has never happened before, and know I can't vault the "original" children that are in the same folder as the ifactory becasue the "new" children in the sub folder were checked in. So now I have two versions of each child, one in the floder with the ifactory, the way I did it in 2009, and one in a subfolder. The ones that are tied to the drawing are in the same folder as the ifactory. I have a mess.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nathan

Hi! Did you try the registry trick on R2010? To make it work, the same change should apply to R2010 registry.
Thanks!

Johnson,

Thank you for the reply. I went to the registry and there are two options for creating "WORDS" the DWORD for 32bit and the QWORD for 64bit. I tried creating a QWORD and the flat structure did not work then I created a DWORD and the flat structure worked. I am running a 64bit OS and 64bit Inventor, why doesn't it use the QWORD?

I don't know anything about the Registry or how applications use 64bit as an advantage, so this is more of a question to help me understand why Inventor 64bit uses anything 32bit.

Thanks again,

Nathan

Nathan,

I do not think registry keys for a given application should differ with respect to OS. I think the longer word in 64-bit is storing data longer than 32-bit. In this case, DWORD is good enough for storing the data. There is no point changing it to QWORD.
Thanks!
