Time for a New System

I'm buying a new system and thought I'd post it here for comments just
in case I've specified something really stupid.

Motherboard - Tyan S2466N-4M dual AMD processor w/ integrated NIC

CPU - Dual AMD® Athlon™ XP 2400+ -266 FSB Socket A

RAM - 2048MB (4 X 512mb) DDR System Memory PC2700 333MHz

Video - nVidia® Quadro 4 980 XGL dual head 128MB AGP

Hard Drive - Western Digital 800JB 7200RPM ATA 100 80GB

CDR - LG 52x24x52 CD-RW

Case - AOpen H500 Mid-Tower P4 300w P/S

Modem - AOpen FM56-PM 56K V.90 PCI

Ethernet - on motherboard

Sound - on motherboard

Mouse - AOpen Optical Mouse (I'll have to check that this is a wheel mouse)

OS - Windows XP Professional Edition

AV - Norton Anti-Virus 2002 (I know, this has to be run manually).

plus of course the usual suspects like keyboard, speakers, 3.5" floppy
drive and my trusty 21" 1600 x 1200 pixel monitor.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yes it has some very stupid parts in it. Please send it to me and I will fix it up and
send it back

One thing that pops out at me is the powersupply. With AMD and a dual I would suggest at
least a 400W. I went with a 450 or 500 (can't remember for sure now) And make sure the
case has plenty of cooling fans.

You might also want to make sure that the CPU's are "MP" type for dualie use.

This is a link to a great place to put together a system.
They will assemble & test the MB, CPU & RAM before shipping it out. Plus they have good HD's, RAM & CAD Graphics cards.

Kent:

Thanks. I was assured the case has plenty of cooling and I'll take your
advice on the power supply.

Maybe I have to look at the case with the window on the side and the
cool purple light that shows the innards 😉

I'm sure it's a type-o but for a dual CPU setup it should be an Athlon MP (not XP).

Getting PC2700 (333Mhz) RAM won't do you much good when your motherboard and CPU will only run at speeds of 266Mhz. You should be able to save some money by getting PC2100 (266Mhz) RAM instead. I don't think that motherboard has an 8X AGP slot so you won't be utilizing your Quadro 980 8X AGP card to it's fullest potential.

Also, I'm sure you realize that you're not leaving any RAM upgrade room by filling your RAM slots. I know 1GB sticks are more expensive, just thought I'd point it out.

Tom:

Sounds good. Not that you've lost me or anything, but what's the
difference between XP and MP?

You probably wan't either a faster FSB on the cpu (and matching mobo) or slower ram in larger chip sizes. If the 900 XGL is cheaper than the 980 you might consider it.

I agree fully with Kent. A 300w power supply just ain't going to cut it on that system.

I know this might sound stupid, but make sure the mobo has AGP slot. We just
ordered a Tyan mobo for Xeon dualie and found out no AGP slot. Only 3 mobo's
support dual xeons with AGP. (I know you said Athlon, but it might be same
problem).

I just went to XP Pro from 2000 Pro and I am very disappointed, and yes I
have disabled hyper threading and done all the tweaks and it is still is not
as fast as or reliable as 2000 Pro, but live and learn.

My advice is stick with 2000 Pro if you can still change your order.

LOL, I kind of agree but I'm usually the odd man out on that opinion. I suppose a lot has to do with your drivers and hardware combination but I'm a fan of W2K over anything else.

Just to pour some salt in Albert's wound... 😉

My WinXP from Win2k experience has been great. I'm not talking about any leaps and bounds in performance increase but it's definately not slower and the added XP treats are nice to have.

I don't think the XP was a typo so thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. It sounds like there are a few
mismatches in the system that I would never have thought about
identifying. One way or another I'll address these and refine the specs.

Another suggestion is to try to find a motherboard and hard drive that supports a 133MB/sec transfer speed. it's not a biggie but will get you a little faster hard drive transfer speed.

Let us know when you redefine your spec.

MP is AMD's code for Multi-Processor. The XP units will not support dual the processing function, even on a dual board.
