Texture Directory

Does anybody know if there's a way to set the Texture directory like you do the other directiories in the "Application Options">"File" dialogue?

If so, HOW?

I found the same question here:

http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-general-discussion/iv9-texture-directory/m-p/1155634/highligh...

I recall asking this question myself on at least one occasion, but never got a response from anybody.

Now that I'm re-visiting customizations, I'm back to pulling my hair out through lack of adequate documentation on these matters in the "Help" system, as well as lack of consistency in the program interface.

I recall writing Autodesk about this many times in the past, indicating the importance of putting everything in one place w/o using Vault or some other tricky scheme. I just want the out-of-the-box program to have enough settings to control the locations of customization data, so it can be safe-and-secure for re-installs and other 'management' needs.

Will someone please inform me where the setting is for specifying the Texture directory?

Thanx!

Hi cadman777,

There have been significant changes in this area of Inventor in recent versions, but for the version of Inventor that you are using, this link should describe the method for including additional texture directories:

http://docs.autodesk.com/INVPRO/2010/ENU/Autodesk%20Inventor%202010%20Help/index.html?url=WS1a919382...

You could also just redefine your Project > Folder Options > Design Data directory in order to point Inventor to a single, backed up, network, location or your choosing, to used for all of your styles and design data, and then make modifications to the texture directory as needed. That way you don't risk loosing data should you need to reinstall, and you and other Inventor users can work using the same design data:

http://docs.autodesk.com/INVPRO/2010/ENU/Autodesk%20Inventor%202010%20Help/index.html?url=WS1a919382...

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis

Thanx for the input, Curtis.

Yes, I had already read that part of the Help system before coming in here and inquiring.

Yes, I've always had my own separate directory structure for these files, which is useful for securing my custom data.

However, the "Textures" folder is not part of the "Application Options">"File" management directory structure.

So, the program forces me to revert to copying my custom "surfaces" into the default install directory, so the program sees them when they are needed.

My objective was to point to my secure location for use on a program-wide basis, not on a project-by-project basis.

Am I missing something here which is causing me to be blind to the proper method of doing this?

Glad to hear things have changed in recent years for these data management issues, which is something to consider.
