This is a weird situation where I have 10 text boxes in a sketch to Emboss them into the side of a block. I kept getting errors: "Could not build this Emboss, The attempted Thicken operation did not produce a meaningful result." However, when I would select only 8 text boxes Inventor cooperated and completed the command. Now I realize that if I leave the Emboss set to engrave but choose the direction facing away from the block Inventor also completes the command and it all looks good. This is really confusing to me, anyone else got any ideas? The other side of the block worked fine to engrave INTO the block and it has more text than this side.

Maybe I can partially answer my own question. Did some more research here and realized that for a flat plane like I am working with it is possible to use Extrude. This works perfectly.
I find "extrude" works better than emboss for text on flat surfaces..
I use extrude for all my "silkscreening" text on our faceplates.
Hi wkoehn,
If you have the need to do a lot of this kind of thing, then you might find this useful (note that it works on text as well as sketched profiles):

I hope this helps.

Curtis,
This is an imported stp file and all valve initials imported as one 3d sketch for all sides of the block. Would there have been any way for me to use the closed profiles in this 3d sketch to extrude into the block? I tried multiple different workflows using patch/thicken but all seemed too slow so I decided just to create new text and extrude. I am guessing your iLogic would only work on a 2d? It will still be awsome for times like this with lots of text.
Thanks!

Hi wkoehn,
Indeed it requires a 2D Sketch.

Yes that ilogic that Curtis wrote is AMAZING.. Saves me TONS of time..
I use it all the time for my silkscreening.
