Autodesk has a very good book but I'm not sure if
it's available to the public retail (check the Autodesk e-store) or just used by
resellers.

book is real good but lacks a index and I consider
that very important.  I did also get "Autodesk Inventor From The Top" very
good, seams to follow AutoDesk training manual. the cware book does look
interesting but looks as if it also lacks an index. I just want a book that
I can also use as a reference manual for when I get stuck as to which
command or to verify how a command works (options).sometimes online help is just
to big of a pain to search for what I'm not sure of  what i realy
want.

I use the Autodesk Essentials Courseware. I haven't had any takers for IV training since R6 came out so I haven't seen the R6 book but I doubt they changed much. Probably just added to it. I've always found the previous Essentials books to be very good for training.

Here's a link to where you can buy the book:

Have fun.

I would love to have a reference manual also.
All the books I have looked at (not implying I have seen every book available)
that are available for Inventor are basically just tutorials.  Some are
very good tutorials, but none of them are really reference manuals.

That is what I liked about the Autodesk
book....while not a pure "reference manual", per se, it did cover commands
(and underlying concepts) in greater depths than the typical tutorial/lab
book.

I have also seen a book that is sooo bad I'm
actually afraid to mention it here....no command explanations, just labs (that
barely worked), and no two pages were the exact same format.

Mark,

Normally I would remain silent on this message, but
only wanted to point out that the CrWare book does contain an index and we
believe our material is written for the specific purpose of serving both
needs, both as in class instructor led courseware and an after class
reference or simply for the self paced learner.  I know my opinion is bias
but I truly believe we have greated exactly that.  The reason we believe it
is a reference is because he command discussed is covered in detail and every
option of its dialog is also defined.

I truly hope you would consider our material in the
future.

I believe the Jr College I teach at uses the book "Crossing the Rubicon" by Elise Moss (I hope that info is correct as I am at work and the book is at home) What I have read of the book I found very helpful. Ms Moss contributes to this NG occassionally and is also active in an Autodesk User Group (maybe president). If you search the archived R5 NG you will find contributioons by her.
Good Luck

thanks I'll take a closer look at it, good to know.
I've gotten leery of buying technical books on line that I can't get a
good look at. Been burned couple of time and when they cost $50-$100 that's too
many times for me.
