Stress Analysis File Management

Is there a way to purge Stress Analysis Information from Part Files. Or a way to permanently delete this information once a Stress Analysis has been performed?

I would like to also keep these files from being checked into the vault. Does anyone have some suggestions for me? Thanks for your help.

Hi Blaste,

We store the load and constraint information within the part file itself.
We store the results information in the *.ipa file. The *.ipa file is the
analog of the ANSYS workbench *.dsdb file. The benefit of keeping around an
ipa file is that you can view the results of a saved simulation without
having to re-solve.

In order to "clean" the traces of SA from the part and disk, you can
delete the loads and constraints in the SA environment. Also delete the OLE
link to the *.ipa file in the 3rd party folder in the model browser and
delete the *.ipa off disk.

Beginning with R2008, we adopted the new ANSYS components from Workbench
11.0 (we use their meshing and solving engine). With the new ANSYS
components we inherited additional result files. They appear in a sub
folders that resides next to the part file. We have a seperate folder for
static structuaral and modal results. e.g.:

...\\AIP\Stress Analysis\Static Stress\

and

...\\AIP\Stress Analysis\Modal\

Within the "Static Stress" folder we have result files called
(_Structure.db, _Structure.esav,
_Structure.rst, file.db, file.esav and file.rst)

Within the "Modal" folder we have result files called
(_Modal.rst and file.rst)

The "file.*" files are just temporary files that have no OLE link to the
part file. They are temporary in the way that once you close the part, they
are automatically deleted off disk. These non-unique file name files are
NOT added to Vault automatically when you checkin the part (which is good).

As you may have found out, the unique-name result files in the subfolders
can be quite large. In order for them to NOT be checked into Vault
automatically when you check in the part, we have the SA setting "Create OLE
Link to Result Files". You can uncheck this setting and the large result
files will not be added to the Vault automatically when you check in the
part.

However, the *.ipa file is not affected by the "Create OLE link..."
setting. If you don't want it checked into Vault, please delete the OLE
link from the 3rd party folder.

Keep in mind that even if the setting "Create OLE Link to Result Files" is
unchecked, those unique-name large files will still be commited to disk, and
you have to manually delete them from disk if you don't want them around.

Please let us know if you have any more questions, comments, etc.

Best regards, -Hugh

I forgot to add that if you are using a automatic file backup system, you
may want to exclude those large result file types from being stored in your
backup system. We have this as an R2008 readme item.

Thanks and best regards, -Hugh
