.STP Files - Best way to handle them using Inventor 2014

Good Evening All,

I have obtained some .STL files from an Engine Distributor - Deutz. These engine models will allow me to check for tolerances and fit for manufacturing our heavy equipment. Also they will be used for documentation purposes along with BOM use.

The models have lots of detail and contain all the required parts, starters, alternators, headers, exhaust flange etc. etc.

the issue that I am having is the .STP file is ~53MB in size after importing to an .IPT

How do other users handle these large type files. Is there a way to shrink them down without losing visual details? I need the exterior of the engine to remain accurate, however the inside can be altered or  "shelled" if that will shrink size down.

Anyone else have any experience working with large files?

Thanks!

You refer to both stl files and STEP files.

These are two very very different file formats.

Which is it?

Are you familiar with the Simplify (assembly) ribbon tab in 2014?

The Create Substitute on the Productivity tab?

Basically I think you may be able to create a derived "shrinkwrap" file that removes internal detail and external detail that you are not interested in.

Sorry JD, I meant .STP files. I have tried to use the simplify tool, but it didn't shrink the size down at all.

I will look into the create substitute tomorrow at work though.

Thanks!
