start folder

I've just had IV6 installed and I can't seem to get IV6 to use my projects
folder as my initial startup folder in the open dialog. Instead it keeps
going to a network drive that has tons of files in it. Can this be set
somehow?

Not sure, maybe this is what you are after:
I have several Desktop shortcuts for IV, each starting IV with another one
of my project files.

Yeah, I had that set already. I double checked it and it is correct but
Inventor still goes to the network drive instead.

It defaults to the last one you worked on (the checked one).

I think I may not have been clear at what I am trying to do. I am not
switching project files, I am just trying to get Inventor to start off in my
Workspace folder when I start the open dialog and sofar I've been
unsuccessful.

Is the problem with just this one project file or for all project files?

All project files.  However, each project file
seems to start in a randomly different folder, none being my
workspace.

Thanks Mike. Now you've put your mojo on me. I'm now seeing the same thing. I created a quick project file to only look at the C:\ drive and it's defaulting to look elsewhere. I can fix it by turning off Relative Paths but as soon as I turn Relative Paths back on the Workgroup reverts back to some other diretory.

Ok Mike, I'm not sure exactly what's going on but if you edit the IPJ file manually via Notepad it seems to fix the bug I created here. Let me know if that works for you.

Yea we get that here too. specially if the Locations area of the open dialog is full (needing a scroll to see everything). It seems to scroll to the end and select the directory at the top of the list. So depending on your projects a different directory for each one. Quite annoying and have not found a fix. Neither sp fixed it. - ed -

We use notepad to edit ipj's but if the list in the Locations area is full it does not help, at least here. What about you Mike? - ed -

It seems that there is a limit to the number of
locations you can have under anyone of the subheadings in a project file.
The limit appears to be 12.  If you exceed 12, then Inventor does not start
up in your workspace.

Can anyone confirm?

No, can't confirm. My test gave me trouble with just one entry under any heading.

I have been working on this problem with my dealer,
and they have a call into autodesk.  They claim that it is the quantity 12
that is the problem but I have not been able to verify that one way or the
other.  I will see if they can provide me with a work around and then post
it here.

Are you starting by opening IV and selecting the
project there or by double clicking on the IPJ?  I have seen different
behavior based on how you access the project?  You should always do the
former..

No, I am not double clicking the project.  I
have only one project right now so I am not switching projects.  The
problem is I simply start in the wrong folder when I select the open
dialog.  I tried creating different project files with different numbers of
folders and different arragemnets of folders to see the effect on which folder
the open dialog starts in.  It does change which folder it starts in, but
it still never starts in my workspace unless I reduce the number of folders
listed in the path to just a handful..

This is a bug that has been introduced since r6.

You can not control the the startup folder within your project
workspace. Re-ordering the statements has no affect. IV just uses its
favorite little location with loss of user control to specify.
